Newbie in need of advice
Re: Newbie in need of advice
I'm guessing they realized they took a bath on the deal with 30% off? I would not have got the tiger 1 if not for that super deal... it costs me more then $65 for three days worth of food from the supermarket.

Greetings Robbie.... it's always good to have a plan.... I personally thought about doing a double hull tank... but really it isn't that practical IMO.... especially if you super detail it.... as there will be an issue of handling the thing once it's done...To the contrary of what I just said though... there are some pretty "in depth" detailing done here on the board... just search for Tiger! and you will come up with a bunch of topics and builds
Heng Long is a great brand... I like them a lot....all my tanks except one are Heng Long... though others have had problems... I never have to the degree exhibited
Shop around though... not sure where you are located...but if you are in the continental US... there are many bargains to be had on EBAY ...I would also recommend a place called Mato Mart.....if you are in the UK... go with forgebear or Welshdragon
Your timing could not be better....as many companies are coming out with new tank models....there is even one seller on EBAY UK taking pre orders for the new Mato Metal Sherman
Welcome and Enjoy your Adventure

I think it's like that all over lol..... MOMs are worth more than DADsMarc780 wrote:I'm guessing they realized they took a bath on the deal with 30% off? I would not have got the tiger 1 if not for that super deal... it costs me more then $65 for three days worth of food from the supermarket.

Kind of disappointed they don't carry the Higher end models.... Have you tried Mato Mart ... they have a sale till the end of the month
http://www.matomart.com/main.php
they carry IR and all sorts of different packages... and on the mid range S&S... include metal gearboxes ...so no more worries or grinding noises from those plastic ones

Have a good one Mark

I have both the taigan and Tamiya tigers and I can say with experience the Tamiya is better value and the cost difference is negligible when you add it all up. With the Tamiya you also have 0 risk of buying dud parts but with taigan you do. when you sit them next to each other it's like comparing a Vauxhall Astra an an Audi A3. That isn't a knock on taigan but to get them reliable and correct the errors, upgrade the RC gear it's not cheap. I think the OP would be better off with two entirely plastic HL and see how he goes.Marc780 wrote:I built many 1/35 scale and 1/24 scale tank models, starting in the '70's. For a tank that drives, there are several good reasons to skip them completely and go straight to the heng long tanks: first, there is no room inside for the hard ware! And they are priced the same as the heng long 1/16 scale tanks! Also the parts to mod them are scarce. I don't bother with these smaller scales anymore.
As far as buying a tiger 1- at hobbygasm.com if you buy now they have a promo code for 20% off or something close, I don't have the code (its for Father's Day so only good a few more days) you can find the code with google..If I find it later today I'll edit the comment and put it here but I can't find it at the moment I am on my phone. I got a tiger 1 for $65 shipped price.
Comparing tamiya to heng long is like comparing a rolls Royce to a toyota. Both have the same type of 4 wheels touching the ground and both will get you exactly where you want to go.
Youve probably seen tamiya prices, if i were spending that much I'd simply get a full metal hull taigen tank, to me a much better value! The parts don't interchange with HL and not sure they are much better anyway- I bought some tamiya zimmerit sheets and they were pathetic...
A Good place to buy parts for HL is Ali express. Jack Wang is a good reliable vendor there. You cannot trust every vendor there however there is a heng long store and a mato store there and they are reliable also.
The first upgrade I recommend is the heng long 2.4ghz radio system. At $80 the price is a bit steep. But if you find the performance of your new tank is erratic, and this bothers you, don't bother spending (wasting) money and time trying to fix it, I'd go ahead and get the 2.4ghz system -it is very easy to install.

I have only one Tamiya ( a Ebay Sherman with all HL electronics ) A mato T34/85 converted to HL. Also a hobby engine m1a2 converted to Hl. Everything else is HL. Most of which I have modified in one way or another. The abs plastic they use is much sturdier than the styrene Tamiya uses. I currently own at least one of everything that HL has put out except for the King TIger. Some are not as detailed as far as being exact duplicates of the originals until you get up to their newer offerings like the KV 1, jagpanther. panther G. and the newest Sherman. Make sure you get one of the units that has the rx 18 mfu or the new 2.4gz system. The older panther and the m41 are way out of scale but run well. The tiger 1 and the m26 have barrels that are in the recoil position so they look short. They are airsoft shooters anyway and you would have to convert them yourself to do IR battling. Get an IR pz 4 and and IR KV 1 and battle away. The IR version of the M4 Sherman is hard to find.
