Scale Weights.

Post by whjohnson »

Hi guys - been busy so not had much time online recently.

I wonder if anyone could help with working out the scale weights for the HL Tiger 1 & Panther G?
The tanks are obviously 1/16 scale in size, but what would be the scale weights in KGms?

Anyone any tips on how to work it out?

Mass is a product of volume of material. Scale 1/16 means that every 1 inch of length on the model equals to 16 inches of length on the real vehicle. However, a tank is a three-dimensional object, so every 1 inch of breadth equals 16 inch of breadth and every 1 inch of height equals 16 inch of height. Therefore, the volume of every component is 16*16*16 larger on the real vehicle than the scale one. And so will be the mass. A tank 16 times scaled down would weigh 1/(16^3) = 1/4096, or 1 kg for every just-over-4-metric-tons that the original weighed.

A 1/16 scale Tiger I would, taking 54 tons as listed by Wiki into account for the real vehicle, have a scale weight of 13.18 kg.
A 1/16 scale Panther would, taking 44.8 tons as listed by Wiki into account for the real vehicle, have a scale weight of 10.9 kg.

Conclusion: the R/C tanks we love so much are woefully underweight.

..... What, you think tanks are light vehicles?

Hi Lert,

then at least my Panthers are just about the right weight.
my Coelian weighs about 10kg currently under construction and there is something else to it. My Hulls and transmission are tested up to 15kg at the Jagdtiger.
That should but please do if the drive and the gear are also only built for these weights. Normally, the limit at which the technology is overwhelmed achieved, depending on tank 6 to 8kg and the lighter of the model tanks, the fewer problems he makes while driving.

I don't know about that, once you start adding metal parts the weight soon piles on.

Also tank weights are often given listed as a tanks full combat weight with the fuel tanks and ammo racks full. A tank that's running low on fuel and ammo will weigh a bit less.

Hi WOZ, The combat weight of a Tiger 1 was 57.250 Tonnes and the transport weight was 52.250 Tonnes, plenty of spare capacity for an extra bottle of shnapps and half a kilo of bratwurst eh! shaun
I think I am about to upset someone :haha:

in all seriousness, the final drives, gear boxes etc etc we know were affected by the weight & temps, maintenance and combat stresses.
My Jagdpanther suffered a right side drive failure on its (model) maiden fully combat laden run(plastic gears) and that is not a scale weight.
Puts things into a tiny bit of perspective.

Well, the technology must be the weight requirements.

If you need heavier armor construction to other gear Hull and Suspension
