1/16 M4A3 (76mm) Sherman from Jnewboy Customs

Post by Jnewboy »

I did not document this build as I am still learning the technical side to this hobby. After reading this Osprey book I wanted to do a Sherman it covered that caught my eye. I am not an American armor expert. Most of the stuff I do is German or Russian so I wanted to do this as it would be even more of a challenge as this is also my first 1/16 tank. Here is the book and some shots of the tank being built in the book and excepts:

Working with models that move is a new challenge however I am use to building things strong and durable as they have to survive the mail and I have been selling models for years all over the world on eBay and through my online store at http://www.etsy.com/shop/Jnewboy. My tank is currently for sale in my shop.

Here is the real tank:

In a nutshell, I removed the gun mantlet and barrel, I used a mantlet I bought on eBay and a Panther barrel that was cut down to fit. I made a counter weight for the rear of the turret and after that everything was cosmetics. Textured the turret and front lower hull, built the cages for the periscopes (no kits available) and so on, lots of little details, handles and a better .50 cal. Made a nice commander that is held in place with a powerful Neodymium magnet. Once all the building was done I did a color modulation and then the chipping using a brush. The rear deck star was stenciled on. The stowage was all hand painted. The dust and oil and fuel spills were done in layers as it would happen naturally. Then I sealed it several times so nothing can come off. Thanks Guys

Good Evening,
Having just finished a Sherman redo, I can really appreciate the work you put into this one. I really like your 1/18th scale tanker figure made into a proper Commander. I use the same one with a helmet on perched on the turret of 'In The Mood'. All the weathering, paint and stowage looks splendid. Just a sweet job all the way around!
regards,
Painless

Thanks! I learned a lot from your build, I used your method to texture the turret and it worked great! Thanks for all the time you spent documenting your build it really helps people!

I was a bit hesitant to use a Panther barrel but the builder in the book said he used one and shortened it and modified the muzzle break so I did the same. Your texture trick worked out well! I think the next 1/16 tank I do will be a Tiger I but I must complete 4 commissioned jobs first so it will be several months before I can start.

Excellent job an a rarely seen version of the Sherman. I think most people think this prototype never made it to the ETO.
