Is it worth upgrading to the Heng long 2.4 mhz radio system?

Post by Marc780 »

Would post a picture but I'm on my phone.... regarding the HL
2.4 mhz radio system.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00G7GZTS ... UY1PLPJTY9

Does anyone have experience with it, installed it or upgraded to it? The advantage is stronger signal, they say. I've had significant problems with transmitters etc. and I was wondering if it us worthwhile to upgrade? The cost isn't outrageous and if it works as advertised I figure it might be worth it. However are there any issues with installing? Are there other things you have to buy to make it work?

Can you use the same transmitter on another tank or is every transmitter "mated" with just one tank?

What kind of range are we talking about? (I'd think 50 feet would be more then enough, 30 would be adequate)...

Most important, does that sensor/receiver/whatever it's called in the picture, need to stick up out of the tank in all its ugliness or is it hidden inside the tank?

I know I should probably post this in the electronics section but didn't want my questions to get buried...) All opinions welcomed please if you have one about this

Marc,

There is no sensor. It is the binding switch you see in the picture. Basically you press the binding toggle to bind the tank to the receiver, so yes, one transmitter can work with multiple tanks and vice versa. You might also want to look into Taigen's 2.4 Ghz as well since they are essential identical. The binding process is a little simpler for Taigen. Both system are swap in/swap out with RX-18s. Again with both system there will be no external antenna for your tank.

You can buy cople of complete system so you have a back up transmitter, but after that you can just buy the receiver/MFU, liker RX-18.

2.4 is a good upgrade....as Micheal C has described the Heng Long uses that binding switch...it's a good investment as you get more range with no antenna on the tank or transmitter ...the advantages over the older system is better... sticking with the same brand as your tank is a good Idea

Good luck Marc

Re: Is it worth upgrading-new tank loses signal and goes mad

Thanks Alpha and Michael, I took the plunge and grabbed the last one off Amazon. $73 US and I was a bit motivated perhaps a bit rash also.

I noticed aliexpress has that 2.4 mhz transmitter for about $35 sold individually, and the board for about $35 seperately but the other part with the wires, i couldn't find. I quickly worked out the costs incl. shipping would be the same or more then buying the amazon set so that's what i went for (but at least i know where to look for spares)

I took the new tiger 1 out to for a short drive on pavement this evening and it worked fine for several minutes. (Let me add i have unscrewed the antenna from the connector in the hull for easier access for the modding and painting i'm going to be doing later. Also the whip antenna is not screwed in place either. I suspect this may have played a part in what came next).

I'm driving the tank in my apartment complex car ports and dodging the tank behind pillars staying out of their way as that would not be a cheap mistake. Then all of a sudden every time a car would go by the tank would go haywire. It would go forward and back randomly all on its own, it had stopped responding to the controls no matter how close i was! I had to pick the Tank up so it wouldn't commit suicide and drive under a car. When a car passed by so did the problem. I can't imagine what signals they were putting out that would cause all that to a 27 mhz R/c tank!

Trouble is i had the same problem with the King tiger and not knowing any better, in my ignorance proceeded to assume the circuit board is bad and tore into that one. I did not do that with this one i will hook up the antenna properly and try again...I have several feet of r/c antenna wire on the way going to wind that around something and mount it in the hull of the tiger. The King is getting this new radio system when it comes...as for the two tanks losing signal and going off on their own, I can only assume one or more of the following happened,

-not hooking up the antenna caused an inherently weak signal between transmitter and tank...
-the interference or cross-talk from gate remotes (although this was far out of range of the gates), cell phones, or ??
-weak batteries in transmitter putting out marginal signal?

After seeing this happen on the king tiger as well i decided to bite the bullet and get the upgrade radio (what good's and R/c tank with a crappy radio, it's a static model then...)...Did i make the right assumptions or could something else be at work here with the tank control issues?

I would avoid these like the plague, there's not really any improvement in sound or control over the normal RX-18 and you dont get tamiya compatibility for battling either.. Your far better off saving a bit more money and getting a Clark board and a cheap 2.4 ghz hobby radio.

They're a big improvement on the crystal sets.

In what way? I had the taigen 2.4ghz set and it didn't drive any differently to the 27mhz set

Range, more sensitive control and sound (though mine came with a new speaker).

Also with the 2.4ghz system: no antenna needed on the tank and no bendy telescoping eye poker on the handset.

You can also dispense with the aeriel and the receiver board but I still would not change to that system when an IBU2 will change it to a real R/C Tank, and while you have to spend more for both the IBU2 and the Transmitter/Receiver it is still plug and play. It is a case of you get what you pay for
I think I am about to upset someone :haha:
