to someone doing a Historical build could be any one of these



even something else depending on the front

You have an early Tiger from what I can see so suitable paint jobs would include DAK, Kursk camo, gray color modulation or winter white wash over that grey. If you have an airbrush I would suggest Ak Interactive's grey color modulation and just follow the directions on the back, really easy and comes out great!

Bottom line ...no matter what anyone says...Paint it how you want to to be..It's your tank

As said before, you've got an early production Tiger - the thing to remember is most of the early Tigers would get painted and then repainted a number of times during their lives, the ways numbers would be painted and in fact the unit numbers themselves would change so you have lots and lots of variations to chose from. Ultimately paint it in the way that will make you happy . If you want specific advice on a historic paint job just ask.

Keep in mind Apple... many "historical" paint schemes are first based on what the factories sent out...once in the field were subject to changes made by crews and units assigned not to mention any repairs that were done "in the field" ...so pretty much the sky is the limit... to a certain degree a little imagination can be interjected..as it could easily be said the paint was modified because of the limitation of supplies at a repair depot

It's actually an aspect that many modellers overlook...as they strive to achieve a more symmetrical pattern on their models...so if you really like the damaged look ... it is true that there were many times a tank left a repair yard with an entire panel that didn't wear the same paint as the rest of the tank...a for instance would be like a striped tank leaving with a panel that is left with no pattern on it at all

I used to do it for tanks on dioramas back in the day... I rarely see it done by anyone else

We researched this topic in previous post, finding excellent examples of crews painting in the field. From masked off perfect re area paint stations to guys with Buckets and mops under tree's painting their tanks. Once in the field, battle conditions and especially Eastern Front sectors the threat dictated the paintwork. Ugly, dirty mixed coloring to blend into environment being the focus, mainly these guys were just trying to stay alive after 1943 and the Summer of "LOVE" ending at KURSK.

I chose a unit, and just kept with them as they evolved and there equipment evolved. Grossdeutschland.

The debate on Tiger paintwork started almost when the forum was formed, and has been a constant question and answer evolution. Which has produced some excellent reference material TIGER COLORS being once source which I can send you copies of it that will help? We had on online reference source at one time which would sell downloadable books at very reasonable prices.

Just enjoy, and know the important advice given, repainting did and does occur. My new TIGER upper Hull arrived today from DAVE so I will be painting in grey tomorrow. If you would like some photos of the prep and paint methods I will be using then let me know and I will take some photos. I'm going with Tamiya this time and matching to my earlier Turret painted in enamel . Might be interesting?
