Opinions on taigen 2.4ghz?
Hello All
My grandson wants me to upgrade his tank to 2.4ghz and the simplest option for him seems to be the Taigen 2.4ghz package.
However i was wondering if the Taigen offered smoother speed control than the RX18 or are they the same? I was always disappointed with the RX18's almost 'stepped' speed control when I was using one for motion control in my tank and am hoping that they had fixed that on the Taigen unit.
Many thanks for any advice.

Don't upgrade to Taigen, it is an RX18 with a fan on it lol with so many quality boards out there upgrade him to something decent like a Clark or a DBC. Don't waste your money on the Taigen board.

Hi cuppa,
I would tend to agree with FreakyDude on this one. Very small gains to changing to the Taigen T5. Much better (and cheaper in the long run) to go straight to a hobby grade system. The only problem I might foresee is that the controls on hobby grade systems tend to be less straight forward than H/L or Taigen. I guess it would depend on how old and adaptable your grandson is. Most of them pick it up quicker than adults

thanks Gents
I was looking at getting a Clark board for him but they are now sold by Tankzone and having read the reviews of Tankzone on here I think i would rather have teeth pulled than deal with them. I have a spare hobby grade 2.4ghz system to hand (a Planet 7).
Now if Welsh Dragon Models or Forgebear sold Clark boards it would be a different matter. The IBU2 is sadly beyond my meager means.

Hi Cuppa,
I understand that the IBU2 might be out of your price range, but I would always recommend it over the Clark. If it is a case of saving up then I would wait a little longer (not always easy where kids are concerned I understand) and go with the IBU2 or similar.
I have had mixed results with the Clark, and there is additional cost if you wish to change any of the standard settings (IR receiver and Sony remote needed). Some of the Clarks I have had have seemed a bit fragile, where as the IBU2 seems rock solid.
The clincher for me has been Clarks choice of distributer for the UK. I now only have one clark board left, and I think that will be changed out soon.
Having now experienced other types of system the Clark seems quite limited. All that I can see that it has going for it is price, although that is now debatable in the UK.
Have you looked at some of the systems which use the RX18, but with a hobby grade Tx/Rx setup?

Hi Scalawag
I use an RC Tanks Australia RC5HL in my hybrid system but sadly it will not work with a Planet 7. I guess the best idea is, as you said, to bite the bullet and tell him he will have to wait a while and then buy an IBU2.
I had read some reviews on the web that the Taigen system offered smoother proportional speed control compared to the RX18 but I am somewhat skeptical of reviews on the web and wondered if it was just wishful thinking on the part of the reviewers.

I really do think The IBU is the better choice, as it will grow with your Grandson's interest in the hobby and can be moved from tank to tank much more easily when he gets new ones.
The T5 is marginally better but you would pay half the cost of a better board for a minimal improvement. As others have said it is really a RX18 with an integrated 2.4Ghz receiver and fan.

Re: Opinions on taigen 2.4ghz?
i guess it will be IBU2. It is a pity that Taigen did not take the opportunity to do something a bit special but then I bet the majority of their sales are as toys and we are very much in the minority in buying these tanks and running them as a hobby and a price increase would probably impact upon their sales volume.
Re: Opinions on taigen 2.4ghz?
My two cents.... it really depends on your budget cupoftea.... the reason Taigens seem smoother than Heng Longs... is because of the added weight of their tanks... and because they provide you with 3;1 or 4;1 gearboxes ...the controls as you know are easier than the Higher priced units
I would say a "pro" that stands above the "cons" is you won't have to play with the wiring as much...in fact you actually rid yourself of the receiver board all together...and the range difference is really something else
One thing you might want to consider is instead of the Taigen..get the Heng Long... the entire set..with transmitter Rx and binding unit.. will run about 75 us
Good luck ...think your grandson would appreciate the added range

Re: Opinions on taigen 2.4ghz?
Tank control on my stock HL Tiger 1 ..plastic tracks and gearbox.. Is marginally better with the Taigen over a RX18.
But the gain has become less noticeable as I have got used to superior control of premium boards.
Wouldn't buy another.
