Mato sherman to HL rx18 problem
Hi I have a mato sherman that I'm putting an RX18 in. I have rewired all the upper hull and it works perfectly, The problem is the lower hull. With the tank on blocks ie. tracks running free. Everything works a treat, But put the slightest load on the tracks and the RX18 fries on the motor controllers within about 30 seconds. I have now fried 2 off RX18 (the first was an old unit but the second one was brand new.
All indications is that the mato motor/gearbox units are very heavy amp drawers. hence frying the RX18. Has anyone else had this problem and how did did you cure it?
or have I got to change the motor gearbox units to HL as well.
Any help or ideas would be much appricated
Denzil.

Hi thanks for that. Do you have any suggestions what else I could try ( this tank is for a friend that I'm fixing up for him.)

Does sound odd that it's frying the electrics. Like Fynsdad said look at the running gear, maybe running the tank on blocks and the motors connected directly to the battery in case need loosening up.
I'm also doing a Mato to Taigen transplant this weekend for a friend so hopefully I don't have same results.

Re: Mato sherman to HL rx18 problem
I agree with fynsdad...that is very unusual...sounds like your gearboxes are binding in some way...or maybe your track tension...I also agree with the remedies.. as there are really only three points of excess friction... the gearbox internal... the point where the axles exit the hull... and the tracks being too tight...you might also want to shim/lube the Mato idler...it's a terrible revelation lol

not a electric wizard, all I managed to do was get the elevation to work and change the wiring round on the motors but never had a problem with the motors ,are you using the mato sprockets not to tight /binding /track,?

Re: Mato sherman to HL rx18 problem
Thanks for the suggestions, I'll pull the lower hull apart and start from scratch checking and setting up each part as I go and see what happens.
Aint it stupid, You scratch build something and have no problems and then you help out a mate and it turns into a nightmare
Thanks Denzil

Re: Mato sherman to HL rx18 problem
FIXED it stripped the motor gearboxes all free tried running in the units for an hour put in new RX 18 30 seconds later lots of smoke.
Got an electrical fiend to look over it and did a comparison against a walter and a Tiger.
Found the problem it is the Suppressor on the mato motors they use a single 22UF 25v supressor across both poles and the heng long use a pair of suspressors ( one from each pole ) he changed the mato motors to suit and bobs your uncle, 2 hours later and still going strong,
Hope this helps any one else

Good Morning,
As Jarndice noted, incredibly useful information garnered from like minded indviduals working a problem together as a team on this Forum. There is a lot of Mato to HL to Tamiya and back again work that goes on. The knowledge about the can resistors is invaluable. Thank you, Hawkeye!
