Hi I have both lower ratio and standard ratio black steel gears .Both types run great use the low ratio gears for big tanks and standard ratio for small tanks .Have not had a problem with any of them ,I think they are the most reliable gearboxes around ,have even fitted 480 motors to some of them.
Only tank I had a struggle to get them in was a Mato Sherman ,had to shoe horn them in also had to cut a bit of gearbox to clear motor terminals ,but they are in now. Best value out there.(even better than Tamiya gearboxes in my opinion)

So where do I get 4:1 black steel boxes for the Tiger 1?
Not sure if these are HL or a different brand?
Can they be had for £19.99?

Hey Guys the gearbox ratio calculator is still active and located in the download section, its EXCEL which does need some updating with newer gearboxes.
But does allow a better understanding of the effect of gearbox / motor changes to our tanks. Weight is a factor as has been discussed, I have Asiatam 3/1 in my oldest Tiger which is also my second heaviest tank.I have changed pinion gears a few times and they have been cleaned and lubricated several times but have never failed.
Recently my Walterson Porsche has been used running against my Nephews Sherman both have the Walterson Gearboxes and run very well, The Sherman has been run very hard many times. Yet to date only problem has been a habit of the right hand sprocket bolt to back out. Finally we used lock tight to solve the problem.
I have the Mato King Tiger and want to convert using Waltersons but the Black set may be the better option, has anyone installed these into the Mato old school Henschel King Tiger?
Thanks Blake downloads/ Catagory Software Tools

What brands are the WD ones?
Re: Black steel gears
They are Taigen and are a good product in my opinion: http://www.welshdragonmodels.co.uk/taig ... 1754-p.aspwhjohnson wrote:What brands are the WD ones?
Please be aware though that they have a slightly larger diameter output shaft than the Heng Long standard and are best used with the metal drive sprockets.
