Strange Masking Technique

Hi All,

Just been browsing missing-lynx and found a kit build of a Churchill Mk3 by Steve Zaloga where he mentions
using toothpaste as a masking tool. It seems you spread it on, spray your model, wait for the paint to
dry, and wash off the toothpaste. Sounds quick and easy. Has anyone here tried this?

never heard of toothpaste as a masking tool, i might try that sometime, that churchill though is top draw, what a build

tried it and it works but give your model a light coat of Johnson's--klear first, another strange method is to use vegi-mite.....

Can anyone beat that?

Think I will stick to Maskol, stinks like an incontinant tranps boxers (just a guess) but it works well enough.

Toothpaste contains a very mild abrasive- and can be used on a used to bed in a new gearbox if you have gears that won't mesh properly-Don't forget to wash off( I have used this on very fine model railway gearboxes

Mr Muscle Cold oven cleaner is a brilliant paint stripper will fetch enamal off plastic and will not eat plastic it even leaves the plastic ready keyed for the new paint (I have used this but not recently they may have changed the formula please test first)

I was told that bi carb of soda and superglue make a brilliant adhesive/filler especially good when mending pettery! (I haven't tried it).

Toothbushes can be used to produce wood effect, sand yellow base coat when dry and set,  top coat teak wood stain just before the stain dries bush with tooth brush- very good when building 1930's Railway carriages- not done this one but seen it done.

basically you can use any nonfat disolvable substance, super glue and bicarbonate soda sets like concrete and Mr muscle works wonders especially on tamiya paint i,m never without a can in my model room, i do use maskol but find you cant really get a consistent  hard-edge with it as it tends to tear the paint but thats mainly with tamiya paints .......
