Lipo instead of the standard 7.2V Nicad?

Post by Huntsman »

Hi can I swap my faulty 7.2 nicad for a Lipo?

I think the tank is a heng long panther. it fires yellow peas and has what seems to be a smoke system.

Stop right there Huntsman, some questions, where are you? to help you better it would be good to know. How experienced are you in R/C , do you know about this Forum and what it offers? I am going to make an assumption that you are in the UK if I am wrong I apologise, I shall also assume you do not know about R/C Modelling, There are people out there just waiting to take advantage of inexperienced modellers which is why we have a BLACKLIST which you absolutely must look at, where many well known names are to be found you have to avoid them if you don't want to be ripped off, we also have a RECOMMENDED VENDORS site where you will find top quality products sold by top quality dealers, you will find dealers in all types of BATTERY as well as chargers here, all your questions will be answered by the members of the Forum but if you trawl this wonderland you will see the answers awaiting you, finally welcome and please do tell us a little about you. shaun

Hi Hunts man and welcome to the forum! If you have a henglong tank and want to run A lipo battery ! You will need to get a lipo cutoff board! As once your lipo runs down to its critical level it will then be scrap! The lipo cutoff once set will cut the power before the lipo reaches critical level!
A safer bet would be to get a hi power 7.2 battery like 5500ma that way you can use your starded charger as useing a lipo you will need a lipo battery charger!
There is other options but that is when the money starts to get silly!!
I love the smell of napalm in the morning!

As you may have guessed I have been given this tank.
So though I have a lot of out of date knowledge about R/C I know nothing about tanks.
You both have provided useful information to help me get this tank working.

Using http://www.tankzone.co.uk I have taken the tank apart to investigate why it was not working only to discover that the battery was quickly dropping to below nominal voltage. Since the battery was faulty anyway I gave it the voltage jolt. Now the battery stays at a high enough voltage for me to see that there is nothing wrong with the R/C gear (minus the turret since that is not connected).

My reasoning behind the Lipo was that I am about to start R/C planes again and could use the same equipment for tanks and planes.

How much is the cut-off board? As I was thinking if I went lipo I would have to have a lipo socket on the outside of the tank to keep checking the battery.

Now I can see the smoke system...
How does it work?
It seems to have a pump and I presume a heating element of some sort.
What does it heat?
Where do I fill it and what with?
If all this info is in here can you provide a link?

Thanks to all.

Hallo Huntsman, glad you seem to have solved the problem, I advised you to read the BLACKLIST as a matter of priority because of the danger of getting ripped off, if you had you would have seen TANKZONE as one to avoid, 2 weeks ago a new member of the Forum lost over £200 to them, I lost £470 2 years ago and too many other members of this Forum have suffered at his hands, if you have not yet read the BLACKLIST I would urge you to do so very soon. shaun

I'm using it as a source of information.
Thanks again for the warning though.
