KV-1 on the bench

I was wondering why you re did the front armor...

So are you going to remove the armor plate on the sides and the hull ? I have to

and those engine screens... anyone know of any photoetch that can be had for them ?

A couple of things, Stinger sent me a picture where the upper glacis plate is not extended althuogh if I was a tank crew I would like to have it. It kinda eliminates the shot trap at the turret ring. I attached the picture here. You can also clearly see the "rings" on the hull joints. On the horn Alpha it is in the right location is is just that the speaker part of it on the HL is on the right side of the dome and in every picture I've seen that is wrong it should be on the left side of the dome. I moved mine last night I couldn't leave it no matter how much I looked away!

The other boo boo I made was on the back screens. I put the brass curved guides on top of the mesh and they should be underneath. So fixed that. Just wanted to mention in case you hadn't got that far. Also there are too many rivets on the frame so sanded them all off and replaced with styrene. Can send pics if you want reference...

Yes ... photos please

...I'm picturing in my mind those rods some of the KVs had on the screens.. most of them were on the outside..on top of the screens on the KV 2s though... the problem I'm envisioning with changing those out... are the size of them... they are so small

With that said though dgsellkirk... I did acquire a suitable spatter cover

so the mesh itself will hopefully meet with your eye for detail

So you busted your horn off... I have to check the detail on my GIRLS UND PANZER version... but yeah.. I feel like breaking it off as well lol

I have pics of the glacis plate both flush and extended on the KV-1E. Amazing how many differences there are between individual tanks. Those O marks almost look like the welded the plates together with large metal cylinders inserted in to large holes, then welded around the perimeter of the cylinder of metal.

Yes. That is something I discovered doing my research on the bracket. I decided not to mess with the horn at this point.
Really... everything I've found has the horn is right were it should be... except in most photo's it's busted off ...even the instruction sheet that came with the resin turret has the horn and the light in that location

What dgsselkirk is referring to, is that the horn is on the correct side of the tank, but the body of the horn is messed up. The driver is above as it should be, but the horn itself, is on the wrong side of the horn assembly. Hopefully that makes sense.

Ok... this is going to mess everyone up lol....I checked all my reference books on the KV-2 and once again the instruction sheet from the resin turret I'm using... the horn is CORRECT

...what's incorrect is the electrical hook up tube... it's in the wrong place,,,it should be directly above the horn not to the side of it,,,then a flexible lead continues to the light

I could only find one picture where the horn was intact ... seems they got broken off quite a bit ...so not having it there at all is just as good lol

just in case this one is a model

here's another... it's pretty clear.. the v shaped megaphone is in the proper location... maybe it came out on later models of the KV... but I really don't think manufacturers would overlook a detail like that...especially TAMIYA

So bottom line... mine stays... just going to hollow it out a little ... because it's way too thick on the edges

.... it's almost like the engine hatch on the T34.... I'm still leaving mine... there seems to be more imagery out there that says it's ok... and like I said... I don't think every model producer would overlook the detail

you also have to keep in mind the one you are using for reference is semi-restored..probably by some museum ... so whoever did the restoration could have put what was available onto the tank

Though with that said...it's a moot point for me... because what I am modelling mine after... the horn isn't there

as far as the anime is concerned that is

as far as the artwork ...it is... and the one presently on the KV is correct

So it's really up to you palepainter... seems both are viable... the present one does seem to be more historically correct ...I'll probably leave mine... even if it's not there... and move the hook up line

Great point. I'm not too concerned for exact accuracy. Only wanting to improve the quality of detail that HL left off. But overall, I am quite please with the quality of their product here. One thing that gets me, why did they have to set up the mold where all the bolt heads orientate to the same direction. That kind of gets me.

HL also left off the nuts on the rear deck running along each of the sides of the hatches. I scraped a few and mades some adjustments to the nut pattern, closer to the real deal.
