It's all new to me but Hi!

Post by TKcommander »

Hi RC.TW,
My name is Andy and I hail from Somerset, UK.

I have been drooling over 1/16 tanks for a few years and decided for Christmas this year I would treat myself. Was thinking of a Taigen as my airbrushing skills are non existent, and haven't done much modeling since my teens (a long time ago now!). Whilst looking on the bay of thieves I came across a couple of local tanks newly listed, did a deal and plunged in!

This is what I bought:

Both are basic sound/smoke Heng Long versions but fairly new and to my untrained eye were well painted and weathered all for the price of two new basic versions. Better batteries too!! Thanks Mark for the hours you must have put into them.

So here is my thinking.. I can have some fun straight out of the box with the Tiger whilst the Panzer IV will make a great present for my son for Christmas. There are some upgrades i want/need to do to the Tiger.

So the bug has set in and whilst I thrash these two I can learn hopefully from you guys how to do it myself a little more accurately on a new project that I wont rush 'cos I have something to play with.

Have load of questions to ask but wont bore you with them all 'till I have time to look right through the forum. Have found some frustrations already mainly being the lack of stock tanks and accessories we seem to have in the UK! Has the import of parts and tanks into the UK gone dead!?! It's also no wonder so many peeps own Tigers as the variety of ready to runs seems soooo limited!

Anyhows I look forward to picking your brains as long as you don't mind the surgery!!!

Oh and just one question ... If I upgrade to a Taigen 2.4GHz system do I need to replace the wiring as well as the module or will the stock wiring just need to be plugged into the new module? Many thanks.

TK, Welcome to the Forum, Anyone with a Panzer 4 will get my attention, but first 2.4GHz wiring, I am in the middle of changing my Panzer 4 to 2.4 GHz, if you buy the complete upgrade from Steve at Welsh Dragon Models or Dave at Forgebear you will get a decent wired speaker(better than the standard Heng Long) as well as the board with attached fan and transmitter AND a plastic bag full of replacement wiring all properly fitted with the right plugs, which is great but in fact if your tank is already wired you do not have to fit any new wiring, the phrase "plug and play is greatly overused but in this case it is absolutely true, it is a doddle and believe me I still think electricity is based on black magic. I have no idea how familiar you are with the forum, I will work on the assumption you know less rather than more, I would recommend you first scroll down to the Vendors site and blanch as you read all the well known names on the blacklist, they there are because too many of us have been ripped off by them. the recommended dealers are people we buy from and in many case individual friendships ensue, we trust these people and for good reason. the reference site is worth a close look but then so is the whole Forum. enjoy and please do not be afraid to ASK questions we love answering them. shaun
I think I am about to upset someone :haha:

Hi TK! Welcome to our world..

I'm sure your son will enjoy his tank - and great to see another dad on board.

I am sure you will find plenty of help from this site as I did...

Thanks for the welcome guys and thanks for your answer to my question jarndice. It confirms what I thought was correct.

Looking at the blacklist definitely makes interesting reading!! In there lies a couple of my frustrations!! :D However I have been fortunate not to have parted any money with them! So Mark has done me a big favour selling me his tanks as it saved me buying from Nitrotek! I am also glad that I am not the only one who considers TankZone overpriced and the site has bad links all over the place with little or no information about the spec of their items! I shall post my Nitrotek customer service experience in the relevant thread.

I had already looked at Forgebear and Welsh Dragon for the 2.4GHz upgrade and thanks to this site will pursue those options.

Have read so little so far but am certain I have come to the right place.

Just a thought ... would it not be better to have the blacklist above the recommended vendors in the forum order as it would encourage guests and new members to read it first. I saw the recommended section and headed straight in there before I had seen the blacklist when I was guest reading the forum..

Thanks for your replies guys.

I have had a busy few days looking through the forum. It has been a great help. At times though it has made me despondent as I cant see myself getting anywhere near the great work I have seen any time soon. Then I get a moment of renewed enthusiasm when something goes right. Been working on a cargo net full of supplies for my Tiger.

Today a 2.4GHz kit arrives from WDM. It's meant to be a Christmas present! Not sure I can wait to fit it tho! :D
