Ancient Heng Long Panther

Post by ALPHA »

Hello Gentlemen
I have a really really old Heng Long Panther... someone gave it to me for parts.... it had no crystal ... no controller...

but i was able to test it.. pulling crystals from my ancient pershing...being a newbie to the hobby .. I don't know the designation for the board... it's just a board...the model I assume at the time was the higher end Heng Long... as it does have the smoke and sound...the sound works.. isn't the greatest imo... and the smoker does as well
Anyway...during testing and after some trouble shooting ... i found that the left drive is not getting power to the motor because of the board...is there some way to repair it... or is the tank a boneyard candidate ?

I have a couple pershings. in my boneyard with I would hope are functional boards... but they are the basic models... one of the solutions i was thinking of is attempting to jump the deluxe board to the basic board... has anyone tried this ?

Thanks ALPHA

If it's not a loose wire then you'll need a new board. They're pretty cheap and you can upgrade to the more reliable RX-18 board.

or go digital

Hey thanks Woz....I was hoping for some input on this... not sure if it's worth doing now... as i would have to change out all the wiring to install that rx18 or go digital
it's all good though ... as I already have a running Panther...

I appreciate the link to forgebear... tried looking for him on ebay the other day... and all I got was a listing for decals :lolno:

thanks again

Yeah... i do get your point... if the unit included plugs it would be viable... but it doesn't ... so acquiring all the parts might just add up to another tank :haha: ... probably not lol.... but i think you get my meaning...especially since the model is old... I mean the smoker doesn't even have the diodes the newer HLs has ... so i'm not sure it wouldn't damage the RX 18

Though i did see another alternative on EBAY... it was a complete IR conversion kit... came with everything... controller Rx18 receiver board and all of the hookups for about 80.00 us

It's something worth pondering over for sure

But for now that panther will be on the back burner...since I've found this place so inspiring... I might just move another project I had in mind up in the list of things to do... that would be to convert a M41 WALKER

into a M24 CHAFFEE

as the chaffee has been a childhood favorite of mine.... I scratch built one in 1/35th scale long before there were production runs of the model...I haven't seen any in 1/16....add to that a working M41 parts tank... and the new inspiration found here... in comparison... I think will be more satisfying in the end ...I hope :haha:

Thanks again for the input FYNSDAD , WOZ... great meeting you :D

Hello fynsdad... WOT..

thanks again for the tips... after reviewing the auction link WOT provided... the RX18 does have the cables :O making the PANTHER a viable restoration project... So it's back at the forefront and the chaffee slips back down a step ;) ...as the work that one will require will be much more tedious and time consuming

THANKS AGAIN GENTS....HOPEFULLY I WILL HAVE SOME PICTURES TO SHARE WITH YOU :D

Just an update.... I ordered the parts needed for the Panther... and actually did start on the CHAFFEE :haha:
I couldn't get the creation of it out of my mind...The only change in the plan.. was not to use the Walker... as the chassis did not fit the parameters of the build

I am instead using a Pershing for the Mod ...turns out it was a better platform... and 75% of the chassis is already made :D

Thanks again gentlemen

Update 2 :haha:

Hello gentlemen.... sad to say... the PANTHER turned out to be a lost cause.... the parts came...everything went well... the carriage was fully operational... but when i connected the upper hull... found only the turret rotational worked.... i tried to swap the harness... but some of the screw mounts snapped on the mantlet...at that point i gave up :lolno: ....took everything back out ...transferred everything into a beat up PERSHING and restored that one instead... :D

So the PANTHER is dead https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFubhsfwp_c (for now)
.... but a PERSHING is reborn...and is undergoing paint as you read this...

The CHAFFEE.... is soon to be next... ( say a prayer for me :haha: )...

Thanks again for all the input... it really did help a lot :D
