1/6th Churchill (again)

Post by Saracen »

So, another drive up and down the country and the Churchill is now down South again :haha:

I can see why Lefty said the electrics were overwhelming:

The transmitter/receiver were 40MHz, so I've binned them and will get a Spektrum receiver for it.

After two days of conditioning, the four 12V 7Ah AGM batteries only lasted about 10 minutes of intermittent driving, so they'll all be dumped and replaced with a single LiFePO4 12V 22Ah pack.

The ESCs whined like the hounds from hell, and I thought at first it was interference coming through the speaker, but after I had ripped all the audio stuff out, it still whined :/
They'll be going in the bin with the rest of the wiring, to be replaced with a Sabertooth 2x25A unit.

Some of the wiring was pretty suspect. Using choc-blocks instead of Deans or XT style plugs can lead to some serious overheating. This is the feed to one of the motors:

The relay in the main power line had overheated as well:

I use 100A breakers to isolate the batteries, so that will be coming out as well.

I've not checked the turret wiring yet but i believe the flash unit has failed, so I'll replace all that with my custom recoil/flash box and install LEDs for the muzzle flash. I'll also install my MG muzzle flash unit for the hull and turret MGs. Not sure if an LED will fit, so might have to use fibre-optics instead.

The tank was fitted with a Benedini TBS5, with the Sherman sounds installed. No-one seems to have the Churchill sound files available, so I'll probably get a TBS-Mini and load it with one of the available truck engine sounds. The TBS5 can then be transferred to a Sherman.

Adrian so glad to see this wonderful tank again. I think once you complete the lobotomy on the electronics she will be an absolutely stunning piece Following along
