Were those PT-91's originally T72's, or based on T72's?

It is a modernization of the T-72M1 manufactured in Poland under license. So upgrade of Polish-made T-72.

The main visual difference between the T-72 and PT-91 are the ERA blocks (PT-91 has the Polish ERAWA system, installed tighter than the Russian one and using smaller blocks)
