PLastic gears and tracks versus steel

Hello all, I'm a male South African in my early fourties and have just been bitten by this tank bug which seems an excellent way of breaking from my very stressful 18+ hr job and that my kids can enjoy with me and my wife. I have yet to purchase a tank and was thinking of getting a Heng Long 1:16 Tiger 1 tank code 3818-1 upgraded version. What I would like to know is some say the std plastic parts are better than the steel mixed version. To me its obvious that steel tracks will handle more wear than their plastic counterparts. Am I purchasing the correct tank to start with, with the limited tank stockists that we have in SA. I have in mind buying one tank to trial then buying two more to involve the family. Thanks,

if your just driving around having fun the the steel tracks are the way to go, For infa red fighting you may want to go with plastic just because it takes a bit of wear off your tank.
Really the choice is yours, the metal tracks make the tank more of a tank so if you can get the upgraded smoke and sound Tiger with the metal tracks.

Welcome to the forum
Plastic tracks and metal gear boxes are better on grass, gravel loose soil
When they lock up the track may break before the gearbox
Metal tracks and gear boxes on harder surfaces
They look better with metal tracks

Thanks, what about the Heng Long tanks, do you all think that they're a good buy ( model 3818-1)

to start plastic gears are fine and the special plastic they use for the tracks may actually be prefered as they don't seem to stretch out like the metal ones. They also take paint very well and it tends to stay on. If you go to metal gears get the gear reduction type. Make sure whatever you get has the rx 18 mfu (10 speeds that let you crawl along slowly and slowly pick up speed as you move the joystick in any direction). Most of the HL's that are packaged in a mainly white sales display box have the rx18.
