Heng Long Panther G IR version is the best out of the box charge the battery and go tank in my opinion. It is accurate enough with no major flaws and it is as reliable or more so than most.
Stug and Panzer IV would have to be next.
The Tiger is the worst but you can have the most fun bringing it too snuff.
Best Kit, I would buy something from here
http://www.ludwigs-hobby-seite.de/flohmarkt.html
I don't know how expensive they are or what comes with them but look at the pics.
The detail here is the epitome of everything a tanker should want. so what if you have to spend and extra few bucks on radio equip. you will have a rock solid machine.
Those are my opinions, Lets see what other people think

I think everyone should have a Tamiya. If possible, first so you see what a well designed system does as a good basis of what you can do with the others. Plus building one gives you a good understanding how things work. The Tiger I or the M4 are both solid kits and the most reasonably priced in the line.
As far as RTR, the most recent HLs, like Freaky Dude suggested, the Panther G (Not Pantiger, be careful) is a nice choice. I like the StuG, but only if you get the metal upgrade (not necessary with the others).

I have a couple of Taigen metal Tigers and a HL Pershing i much prefer the metal ones they just seem right to me but i do wish i could get hold of some more modern stuff, dont get me wrong i like WW2 tanks but theres been enough trouble in the world since then to move on.

at the end of the day a real tank made of steel.so plastic ones do not feel right to me. as for modern tanks the challenger is my favorite modern tank. I've got a picture of me standing on a challenger 2 before they went out for the lastet war it was painted in green and black.but they would let me sit in side the turret as it was classified.

If you want a lot of metal parts then the Taigen Tiger I you bought is good.. I got a Torro King Tiger Metal Edition which is more expensive but also has most metal upgrades preinstalled.. As far as metal ready to run tanks go I think those 2 are the best..
I'm still looking for a good metal Sherman (preverably a Firefly) tank myself..

For the OP.....It depends on what you want to do with the tank. I am in a club that holds monthly ir battles. With ir battleing, new people should get heavy (class)tanks because they allow 9 hits before death. Metal in ir battleing is just extra weight to slow you down and wear down any plastic it comes in contact with. For tamiya ir system battles the best out of the box are the tamiya panther closely followed by tamiya m26. The panther is faster but it is almost impossable to through a track on the m26. If you fight on grass, fwd is better because grass gets sucked into the drive wheels on rwd. I fight with a m26 and the trick in grass is to drive backwards a lot.
If you want to fight in a heng long, you will need to get some kind of battle system to make them work with the tamiya's( they are the standard), a lot of these will be as much as the tank. With the hl tanks, you need to remember that these are toy grade tanks. Only get the smoke and sound tanks as they have better speed control. You spend much time fighting in them and the gear boxes will die and the motors are not much to talk about. All of my hl's have upgraded gearboxes, motors, batteris and speakers. the soundsystem in the hl is just not that good...they sound like chitty-chitty-bang bang. There options with some of the battle systems to upgrade sound cards.....all of my tank have this also.
The hl tanks I rcommend are the panther g( do not get the panther know as the pantiger), king tiger and kv1...all of these are offered in both bb and ir so make sure you know what you are getting .....
