Hi Incaliber45,
Sorry but can I just ask do you mean 'Rope' ropes......or steel hawser ropes...If you see what I mean ?? The cables on the tanks are often called 'ropes', even though they are made of steel.

Hi
+1 on thread...but.....
.........Standard cotton thread is perhaps visually a bit thin, so if necessary it can be doubled over and tied at one end....then you can place the other end in an electric drill and wind-up the thread until it looks to have the right amount of turns....then paint it and that helps to 'stick' the rope together when you release it from the drill when it is dry. OR easier still is to get some BROWN Button- Hole thread.....This is thicker and much stronger and is already suited to be rope.... it is a good idea to paint it a bit to 'shade it' different colours and since it is a man made material you can either tie the ends into knots to stop the length unraveling or you can heat it with a match / lighter to gently melt the fibres together and this will also stop the tread from falling apart. This is some rope that I made about 7 years ago to hold a camo net around a 9 Volt battery holder that I used as a separate power supply for the cooling fans......I know extra fans....silly idea :{ ....

I found from building square rigged ships, that if you look on the model ship sites like JoTika or Amati they often have a materials section.
In these sections they have a large arrray of different diameter threads for making the rigging on many different scale ships.
If you know what diameter you want it usually only costs a couple of £ for a whole reel.
