Hello everyone, I'm Sam, joined up because I'm interested in getting a rc tank, I have been looking at the heng long ones mow for a while, I like the m26 snow leopard (for no other reason than it looks good!) but I've noticed there is a lack of parts available for it, so I have also been looking at the tiger and king tiger because of the almost endless list of extras and upgrades availuable, so here is my problem, which to get? im confident in modelling and I'm interested in painting and detailing, would it be better to go for a hemg long and 'mod it up' or just accept the fact that getting something more expensive like a tamiya or torro model will be better in the long run? One other thing, il be using the tank mainly indoors but will get it out in the garden whenever it's sunny, I've heard that having the metal tracks and gearbox would be better, but for real reliability il need a brass gearbox, I can't find any brass gearboxes online, where can you get them and do I really need it? Hi and welcome to the forum Sam.

Don't be put off the Heng Long snow leopard because of the lack of parts it is a great tank straight out of the box. If you use a Heng Long Tiger on your lawn there is a good chance it will throw a track (it comes off).

As for metal tracks, these add a lot of weight to the tank and run down your battery quicker are noisey and add stress to the grearbox and suspension parts. I have both metal and plastic track tanks and prefer the plastic but the metal is more realistic.

I have a set in my HL Tiger and had problems with them from seizing gears burning motors out, bent drive shafts (to small dia and brass is soft) and grub screws holding gears on shaft coming loose.

Don't under estimate the nylon gears of the standard HL they quiet and work, yes you can strip them if very rough (I've never managed and play on lawn all the time) but not expensive to replace if you break them.

That's a great help, thanks Ian, think il go for a standard heng long then, I was looking at the hand painted m26, but I have seen a king tiger and they ate huge! Mmmmmm, decisions decisions!

Sam, the Tiger and the King Tiger are probably the two 'Most Popular' tanks that there are......which is why there are so many options and upgrades available. The Tiger stands on its reputation as being the best known German tank ever made and for its awesome reputation in the combat field....The 'Tiger Terror' that it induced..even if it wasn't even actually in the area, and of course the King Tiger whose frontal armour was Never Pierced even by 'Piats' and anti tank guns at ridiculously close ranges, yes it was under powered but it does not look to bad today even over 60 years on.
Your question of Heng Long and spend money to mod and to upgrade it ...or to buy Tamiya.....I would have to answer as a strictly 'Personal Opinion' and that would be .....Buy a Tiger 1 ,Taigen / Asiatam hull from Welsh Dragon for about £50 and then mod and Upgrade a Heng Long. The Asiatam / Taigen hull is very hard to beat and you will have a beautifully handling tank for much less money than the Tamiya.
Tamiya make beautiful models, but they are expensive and they do have to be assembled single piece by single piece...and I do NOT have the patience to build something like that these days. Also I would be much happier about driving a lower priced panzer around in the garden than I would one that cost me a fortune to build, with the associated risks of damage from rocks and bushes. Thats just my opinion .....I am sure that you will get others as well........ but price things up and see what the 'Bottom Line' is.

Thanks for the replys, advice, and warm welcome, I've been doing some thinking and have decided on a HL tiger with smoke and sound with the standard plastic tracks and 'box, il razz it round for a bit then upgrade the tracks, wheels, gearbox and prob the asiatam hull, plus some other tweaks before I paint it up, I've seen them on eBay for just over £60 which sounds really good, or are these old and inferior models? I asked the seller if they had the rx18 board but he didn't seem to have a clue!
