Update on my Sherman reno....

So far I have totally dismantled, cleaned and modified the bottom end. All metal was zinc chrimate primed, then all parts painted with olive drab paint by airbrush. The upper idle rollers have standoffs which were flimsy and dimpling the aluminum lower hull. I filled them solid, redrilled, then bolted them up with a nice big washer on the other side. Today I finally got to put the bottom end together. (see pic) Now, I still want to build a backing plate for the rear idlers (which is the chain adjustment) as two little nuts on aluminum sheeting vs the strain of a metal track is not a good design in my books. Also, I have not painted the hubs yet, so will have to charge up my airbrush one more time. And of course, I have to install the rubber tires on the idler wheels.
Then on to the upper hull, of which I have two. I think I'll do one up as the 105mm, and another with the 75mm.... Finally, I will install HL electronics and IR battle system.
Ah, life is good!

I'd love to get m hands on a Sherman.
This one should be an excellent runner after all that work.
Keep the updates coming.
Cheers
John

No pics, posting from work- sorry.
This past weekend, I fitted the Heng Long Rx18 board and such to give my Sherman life. I have not fitted the IR battle stuff, but my Sherman now lives. It was great fun running it around the livingroom bugging my wife with the clankity clank clank while she was trying to watch TV. And I am happy to have tested with my lead acid battery, so I will be able to run my Sherman for about 25 hours straight....

That is actually yellow over the aluminum- it is the zinc chromate primer I use on all my metal parts. It bonds far better.

I think I got it from Canadian Tire - a Canadian hardware/auto/department store. Just go to a hardware store and ask for aluminum primer- it will be zuinc chromate.
I got my final shipment of parts from the AAF Tank Museum. This includes the dist shield braces, spare idle wheels, detailled machine gun from new gen Sherman, etc. Mechanically, I'm coming along on this nicely. Still need to fit the HL Battle system (totally confused on that), build a brace to support the lead acid in the hull, mount the receiver board (the RX18 is velcrowed to the bottom already) and I'm done. Now that I have my final parts order, I can start final assembly and detailling of the upper hull and turret. I sure did have fun driving it around this weekend with the upper hull just sitting on top of the stuff inside- and what torque!!! It is slow but steady- drove over my foot without a single grunt or hesitation.

thanks for the heads up but Canada is a bit far for me to pop down to the hardware store where you got your primmer from LOL
I will try Halfords in Stafford or Stoke near where I live and see if the have any aluminium primer

Sorry Brel....I'd send you a can, but they are very sticky about shipping of aerosols now. I guess they had a few too many cans explode in airplane cargo holds.
