Heng long tiger help.

Hi, I wasn't sure where to post this, as the help section says its for simple queries and what I need is a complete walk through of a heng long tiger...
Basically someone I work with has given me a heng long tiger, that they bought a few years ago for £80 off someone who told them the motors had burned out. He never did anything with it and is I've got it. With it came a box with 2 spare circuit boards in.
I've taken the top off the tank and wired the motors up directly to a battery, and both run, so they've not burned out. But 1 of the motors 'pulses' I disconnected it from the gearbox (the gearboxes are the metal 1's) and turned the gearbox by hand, and you can turn the drive wheel about 3 times and then the gearbox locks up and you have to force it past that point using a screwdriver, so I assume something is bent or got something stuck on it, though I cant see anything. Is it worth trying to take the gearbox apart (if they come apart?) or just replace it?
Also how do the drive wheels fit? As the 1 on the dodgy gearbox is loose and moves quarter of a turn before moving the gearbox?
Next thing is, every picture ive seen of replacement motors and (what I assume is) the control board, the motors are fitted with plugs the plug into the circuit board, but the wires on mine are soldered to the board?
The other problem is that it hasn't got a transmitter, so I need to try and get 1 of those, but money is a bit tight this month, so I can't see what else is working (or not).
Hopefully attached is a picture of the inside, I have no idea what's what, or what supposed to be there so im not sure if there is anything missing?

This is a pic of the tank with he top on, couldn't seem to get it to attach in full like the other 1.

Sorry for such a long 1st post, but I really have no idea where to start with this!
Ps. Do I have to use the standard heng long transmitter or is it possible to use a planet t5 or similar? Thanks.
