Hi has any one cast rubber tyres ? I thought about making a two part wooden mould but using milliput to form the detail . Just would the milliput hold up to the molten rubber . Also how hot would it have to be to melt rubber . Im looking at 1:6 and 1:16 scale tyres .

I do not recall anyone I know using molten rubber, for making tyres.
But I have using polyurethane filler the type you can get in cartridge form, diy stores type.
Or try putting Casting rubber tyres in search, that may bring up some info.

Hi Panther Ausf G , That sounds better dont think the neighbours would be best pleased with burning rubber or the ozone . does it form the trye profile . Im guessing I will need some form of release agent to spray onto the mould ?
Thanks Andy

The tyres I saw cast in Silicone were 1/35th scale. I believe a Simonize car wax polish was used as a release agent on the mould surface.
Some time ago I did read of a chap who experimented with Silicone as a material for the tread on a 3" diameter wheel. He tested it by mounting it on the end of a forked pole and running over concrete and gravel. No significant wear was recorded after his week long trial.
Not used by myself, just somewhere too start your research!

Hi Andy
This in just as a precaution to prevent anyone not fully up to speed with safe working practice.
However you choose to make your tyres and with what material you use be very careful.
Think
First and plan ahead before you start any process; it’s too late after things have not gone the way you had hoped.
Heat
Be aware of the material; make sure you know exactly what it is before using it. Not all rubber products have the same properties. (Rubber and Synthetic materials can be very dangerous if subjected to heat).
Safety
Wear Safety Glasses, and a good Respirator, one fitted with a proper filter. (Not the cheapo things on a bit of elastic from the 99p shop).
Plus any other protection E.G. if heat is involved then Gloves, Overalls. Etc.
I sure you are aware of these measures and will work safely.

Hi Panther Ausf G , Now thats very kind of you to post . I had imagined people melting rubber in the best saucepan in the kitchen . And not only the health and safty issues but a very angry wife to . But joking apart we should always work safly . I dont intend on using rubber I shall go the way mentioned on yours and the other post.
thanks andy
