I see some tanks with a bucket hanging in the rear of their tanks. What was that traditionally used for? Oil/fluid changes? Just curious

A work college of my mine used to serve as a 'tankie', specifically as a driver of a Chieftan. He once told me that, during an exercise, he didn't leave his tank for two weeks. He ate, slept, washed and, well I'll leave the rest to your imagination. The up shot was he, and the rest of the crew, did everything in that tank. I can only imagine how handy a bucket would have been!

i'll bet that tank smelt like a little peice of heaven after two days , never mind two weeks.  on an aside my tanks have always had a bucket after reading a book, i think called cheiftans, about a tank crew going into a nuclear war, that described the bucket for being exactly that.

You could also fill them with potatoes hang them near the exhaust and they would bake whilst you were on manoeuveres. It would have been prudent to sterilise the bucket first, it might have left a nasty taste in your mouth from previous visits!

the buckets were used for anything...throw some gas in it and you can clean your mg42...or use it to dip the cleaning head for cleaning the gun tube. Need some water for the coolent? Just find a stream or pond....and they made better tolits than shell casings....

When I was in the service driving early model Alvis Stalwarts, the exhaust was mounted vertically against the back of the cab, it had a protective cage around it so that goods and people would not get burnt, using a fireproof glove we used to put tins of composite rations (compo) such as irish stew and other food stuff that would taste better for being heated, inside the cage, get to the end of the trip and low and behold cooked dinner, of course the updated Stalwarts came with a sealed exhaust, Progress?
