Debris mesh?

Hi,
I hope this isn't too anorakish but................
I've finally got my HH Tiger I, 99% how I want it to look (is the extra 1% achievable?) but, for that finishing touch I want to add the retro fit debris meshes to the engine ventilation grills. The plan is to lightly weather them off the tank, because I want them to look like an 'in the field' addition, freshly fitted to the battered old war horse my Tiger's turned in to. Now my question is (at last, I hear you cry!) how would they have been fitted? I haven't found a decent photo yet but, I'm imagining they would have been tack welded (oxy-acetylene of course. Which coincidently is the only type of welding I've only ever learn't to do. How old am I?) as opposed to seam welded. Like I said a bit anorackish.
Thanks.
