New tanker question

So I finally got a hl kv1s, it has all metal upgrades but does not have the torque to turn well in grass. I gathered upgrading to graupner 400 motors will help this, but the board I have is the rx13 I believe and can't handle them, and even if it did, I would want the proportional speed to control the faster motors. Is it possible to upgrade to a rx18 from the 13? I have seen conversion for the 14 to 18 but not from the 13.
also, would I need a new controller? I'd imagine so..

Thanks!

I think I read somewere that you have to replace everything, I think, I am not good at this type of thing. I buy the tank and snowproof it and thats all I do to my tank.

Hello KVfan , I did this upgrade on my cheap Tiger 1 - using an Rx 18 (with wires + plugs) , receiver and crystal type Tx from Dave 'forgebear'.
  • Some soldering of wires is required but it is a simple swop .
The original HL gearboxes do struggle in the rough , * aftermarket 3 to 1 'boxes are worthwhile too , they have much more grunt yet still give the electrics an easier time and will transform the characteristics :D One of the best upgrades ever, I do it to all of mine now

He's rite there I've replaced my gearboxes with brass 4/1 gears from forgebear!! Check out his store he's got them in stock !; They give the tank much more torque and should make the battery last a bit longer plus the tank then moves like a real tank plus it takes the bite out of the super spin lol your tank will move a lot slower but it will be close to scale speed then!!!!! :wtf:

Hello KV-1 owner

Changing the electronics from RX13 to RX18 isn't difficult and i've done it on the KV-1 and yes you need a new controller. You'll find it has all the fixing screw holes/poles etc to mount the newer stuff. You may struggle fitting the smoker, specially if you want smoke from the exhaust. If you look at my and Blimps KV-1 builds you see why.

If playing on grass you need to change to low ratio gearboxes (othen called 3:1) otherwise you'll struggle with turns unless you trim your lawn to 2mm. I have Asiatam 3:1 gearboxes in mine and recommend them good mix of speed/torque.

If you need any assistance just ask.

Ian.

Thank you all so much for the info! It seems to becomes confusing looking up answers for the technical aspects of this hobby, so I greatly appreciate your help and input!

One other thing if you could,
I noticed where one place sales the rx18 with receiver board, I'm guessing if I'm upgrading the transmitter then this is necessary as well? I did not see a separate board in my current setup.

Thanks again

I think the Rx 18 package from Forgebear comes with it ( don't forget to get crystals ) ;)

Haha, good reminder.

As I'm looking......I do not see a 3:1 gearbox listed for kv-1
Is it the same as the m26,bulldog?
