RC Tank Warfare community hobby forum

Hi there!

I'm new to R/C but not so much to electronics and gadgets. I'm getting started on my first custom project (not actually a tank) and cam across this forum looking for a transmitter. I'm looking to make a tank steering ground vehicle but am having a hard time tracking down a transmitter to do that. Do you have any recommendations? I've seen a lot of posts that say "oh yeah, its easy buy the kit" or "oh yeah, just add some springs" but I can't find definitive part numbers, kits or the like. I'm hoping that means it really is that easy. Trouble is, my local Hobby Lobby doesn't have kits like that, doesnt know about parts like that, and is generally unhelpful.

I'd like to get a hobbyking transmitter/receiver pair due to price/performace.

This is a protptype application, so I'd like to find parts that I could order if I wind up getting this design into production.

Hi, I am not quite sure what you are asking.
I have just got the 9 channel Turnigy TX/RX from Hobby King, fantastic bit of kit for an unbelievable price.
How to control the tank is dependant on how you set up the channels, I personally like using ch 1 & 3 for track movement so that forward and reverse for each motor is controlled by both the left and right sticks. Channel 2 is then used for turret traverse and 4 for gun elevation.
However a lot of setups have both motors running off Ch 1& 2 on the left stick with the right stick controlling the turret and gun.
You have to muck around inside the TX to set the ratchets and springs according to the desired setup, ie. springs to motor control and ratchet for turret and gun, but that's all.

Welcome to the Forum. I too am a little bit puzzled by your question....but if you wanted to make ...
'a tank steering ground vehicle '......then you are obviously intending to use tracks, so perhaps if you could tell us the size and weight of what you are intending to make and its use ?? then we can 'point you in the right direction' so to speak.
If the vehicle is going to be fairly small like the size of a 1/16th scale tank...then Looking on Ebay for a cheap Heng Long tank is probably the way to go. It would give you the tracks, motors ,chassis, wheels, and control units at a relatively low price compared to a servo system, but if you wanted to perform assorted and detailed additional functions as well ,then the larger 9 channel system may be what you do actually need
