I've been playing again .
  • . . . . This time it's the smoker . . .
a 'CAT FLAP' from a tin foil dish over the inside hole . . .

You must have very small cats where you live ;) :haha:

Blimp,

I take it you still using the HL pump?

So if I’m right your pump is only blowing and no longer sucking as the piston comes out. If that is so, does it work with the plastic pipes attached? As I’ve found once the pipes are on it seriously decreases the smoke effect.

Like those videos I posted in my KV-1 project, smoker makes a small forest fire of smoke on it’s own but when connected up to exhaust noticeably less smoke.

Hence I’m trying a different approach, putting the heater element as close or in the exhaust.

This is my latest attempt, no pump or fan, just resistor, wick and one drop of HL smoke fluid. Needs some further work as no fan blowing air over resistor caused it to get hot and start melting the plastic! 8O

Hiya TB , yes it's a 'blower' now , i can live without the pulsations ( a V12 motor pulsing ? 8O ) - I havn't connected it to anything yet , am doing that next . This is just a cheap 'n cheerful hop up idea for us poor impoverished folk stuck with the stock affair .
  • I have a few ideas up my sleeve as well , how about multiple , small , elements for example ? i.e 1 permantly working one for 'idle' .
2 , another 'piggybacked' on each motor lead , which will become live when the 'engine' does , increasing the smoke volume :problem: - there will still be a delay for heat buid up , but hey , look at what we have to start with :D - one thing i am very wary about is current draw on the RX 18 , splitting the current draw will ease that . For the smoker feed a fan would be better as you've already noticed , less draw - more juice for the resistor
the 'lag' problem i will have a go at , the spare fan i have is a full 5v one but if get it to behave it should work on a little one as well . watch this space . . .

Oops , Quick question for our gnomic ones - as i'm not a sparky by any means , are resistors current flow sensitive ? i.e. ve +/- , will a reversed current kill it or do they need diode protection ?
Ooer ,- it's getting complicated now , my brain hurts , i need to lay down in my darkened bouncy wall room . . .

    Hi Blimp,

Resistors are not polarity sensitive so no worries there.

On the current draw I work out the 15ohm resistor @ 7.2v is 0.48A but as there is a heat up lag going to wire off the main power lead. And only use the HL smoker supply to power the fan.

I read somewhere the overall resistance of the standard smoker is 15.5ohm so probably could use the supply from the RX18 with out any problems.

Righty ho , so the normal element set up can be used for the basis then , with two fly leads from the motors ? Gotcha . Good egg , TB , we can crack this nut yet !

I think the element gets the full voltage anyway. You could link the pump motor so it has a reduced voltage (i think some have resistors on) then bypass this with lead/supply from the motor so ramps to battery voltage and speeds up. But you'll need some diodes otherwise the motors will be electrical linked and as soon as one motor trys going other way it be a died short and BANG.

Does that make sense  of did I woffle ???

I understand , you are right of course , i should have said the three elements are on their own circuits :O
