spare track / sherman hull ?

Post by mcevoyi »

HI ALL

QUICK QUESTION

sherman .... more often than not seen festooned with spare track as a layer of extra protection form hollow shaped rounds ..... on the front of the hull the track is just layed in possision .... but what about the sides of the hull
i wounde if the track was welde in to place ? .. as i some times see the track with the guide horns against the hull
so i an thinking there track was welded ... or was it fitted in place with some sort of track mounting brackets not unlike the tiger turret brackets ??

any one got any info .. thoughts .... as i have super glue ready ...and a pile of track too

are you talking about British Shermans,if so,I belive they were welded,Churchills were often seen with Sherman track around the turret with no visible means of support, racks etc,so I always imagine that they were welded on chevron face out, mostly without end connectors or at least guide horns cut off I think,I will have a look at my refs,US mainly went for sandbags or logs,or field improvised extra armour, including complete glacis from wrecked M4 welded on top of glacis, and armour from wrecked panzers

guide horns facing yep, seen that, maybe hooks like panther turret?yep seen pz track too, easier to use hooks with sprocket holes, when I said Brit I mean Commonwealth also, track protection seemed to become the norm late 44 when more effective panzerfaust 100m/150m became available, fausts were quite rare in Normandy,Canadian and Brit with track covering hull sides, common sight in period pics, along with US with sandbags,it was fear of fausts, starting big time in nov 44,I will keep looking,

google..British sherman tanks with spare track protection, images there is a lovely shot of a firefly with vertical runs without end connectors on hull with a horizontal run again w/o end cons on top,and same horizontal run w/o end cons on turret,www.canadiansoldiers.com and a pic of 75mm with Churchill trk on glacis inside facing out and verticle and the same on hull but out facing with horizontal M4 track run on top, firefly pic shows what looks like a length of grizzly track on glacis along with M4 track

hi Jon thats a great drawing you found there,Israeli Super Sherman,I wish money was no object and I'd have the new Tamiya one,but the price, considering the kits running gear goes back to the old 80's kit I assume,as Mr Tamiya is not shy about recycling old stuff and selling it for top dollar, but I do like Israeli armour, the way they upgrade old designs, how about a Centurion Mr Heng Long, you could give us Brit,Canadian,Swiss,Aussie,Indian,Israeli, and a few others, making a lot of people very happy,

canadian tankers welded the tracks to the hull as the tracks are cast steel not cast iron and can be easily welded using high nickel welding rods as where used to weld the sponson to the upper cast hull there are a few pics of the tanks with track all over the sides on a maple leaf web site
