Unit Numbering Colors

The numbering and lettering composition of German Divisions,Battalions, companies and Platoons is well documented. What seems to be a rather less documented system is how they determined the colouring of the letters and numbers of any given unit.

It seems that in certain era's and sectors a common colouring system was in place but information on this subject is not abundant. Any idea's or help with this subject I feel will benefit us all.

Below is the only reference to tank and specific numbering style and color I have found for Grossdeutschland, this subject is not in either of the three books on this division.

In February 1943, 9 Tiger Is were delivered to the battalion, and none were lost between then and Kursk (even during the fighting around Kharkov). They were painted in dark (panzer) grey with white outlined turret numbers. These Tigers along with 10 PzKpfw IIIs) came from No. 3 Company, Panzer Regiment 203

I seem to remember that thetinitial batch of Tigers in schwere Kompanie GD had the S prefix this was 13 kp,the R was larger than the 2 digit number (almost twice the size)when 2 more Kompanie were formed then A,B,C prefix was used for 9,10,11 kp sPzAbt GD,these numbers were now painted black just behind trunnions,at least some, all?,of the dark grey Tigers had been repainted dark yellow spring 43,and the S over painted leaving the small 2 digit number, the A,B,C system was in place shortly after Zitadel, and was still used in late 44,GD panthers training in France had white with black outline, and there is well known shot of 01 with black outline, not sure about SPW's these had white outline black or red,
