Elmod IR - How high does it need to be?

I have installed an Elmod IR system in my Tiger, but as the Thinktank board is back at Elmod for testing I can't try it out. The sensor tower is mounted on standoffs that I have attached to the base of the turret, with a hole cut through the bb loading shute.
Currently the height of the IR unit places the sensors just about level with the top of the cupola, but I am wondering if they should be completely above the cupola as per Tamiya units etc.
Is there a 'required' height that ensures the IR unit functions correctly?
Also, I am seeing a lot of comments about sunlight etc? Do I need to screen this unit off, or are the filters that are built into the unit sufficient for the task? ( I also wish Elmod had actually encased the top of the unit - it would look a lot neater!)
I can alter the height of the unit very easily as I am using Maplins screw together jobbies.
Cheers
