Hello group, I've got a HL Tiger 1 that my son and I have had a lot of fun with. Now I'm learning the hard way about the troubles with these tanks and have started the up hill battle to beef up the lower hull etc.
I'm tring to make what I can, as the factory metal parts are so expensive.
We've added the RX-18 which made a big improvement in driving. Added a small blower to replace the piston pump on the smoke unit (of course NOW the element has blown out) Will try using the element from a blowdryer.....
Any way, I look forward to being in the group and learning from you guys.
I'm a model railroader mainly but, this is something that my son and I can enjoy together!!
Thank you for you time
Don

Welcome, the smokers are junk, but if you use a ceramic wire wound resistor for the heat the unit will work better. Use the search function their are many smoker post listed.

Hi there  and welcome to the forum.

I have one of the latest Tiger 1s from HL  unwrapped it christmas day ran it round for a while and then decided to put some oil in the tubes as it says in the manuel
not only does it stink  smoke came out of every where except the exhausts :eh:

Quite worrying as Ithought it was on fire :wtf: so it isnt just the earlier tanks that have probs but great fun for all that and sorting out the gremlins is all part of it.

You have entered a whole new addiction with this hobby and this forum is definatly the best out there for info and help

A proper smoker on my Jagdpanther @ idle. These units will be replaced in January with a smaller unit. But the same type of heating element. Sax

Heng long smokers are a joke. When my finances are back on track after my latest tank purchase I will upgrade to the smoker Saxondog is using.

Has anybody tried using a smoker from an O guage steam loco. I have a tiny smoker fitted to an OO guage loco and get excellent smoke output without fail. I think it would be possible to fit individual 00 guage smokers directly into each exhaust although it might be necessary to insullate the plastic from the brass smoker fittin due to heat generated.
