Welcome sir! Thats a fairly open question.

Anyone correct me if I'm mistaken as I'm new to the tanking sceen myself but have researched rather well since starting.

First, a cheap Tamiya? I'm not sure there is such a thing but a lower cost one would be around $800. If that's a bit much to bite off right away then there are several low cost Heng Long tanks that can be built into very nice models. I would suggest to start with a "SS" (smoke & Sound in forum lingo) Heng Long model at the least. If you want to drive it outside then you should either buy the metal track version w/metal gearboxes or modify it asap. The tank with the most available upgrades would be the Tiger I and parts are readily available for it as well as other models but research the one you'd like and decide according to where you plan to drive. A carpet basher doesn't necessarily need to be as bullet proof as an all terrain machine etc.

There are several vendors that have great customer service and good prices. I found Phil at rctankwars.com in Escondido California has excellent customer service and good prices. He is also very knowledgeable about Elmod and sells several IR setups that are high quality. Also RCcommand In Dallas Texas has a nice selection and nice quality upgrades too.

Also Welsh Dragon Models and tank zone in the UK have large selections of top shelf parts and tanks Welsh Dragon having a bit better prices.

In Canada Mato Mart has good prices and a wide variety of models and parts to select from

XF62, First Welcome to the forum, the Vendors listed by Wizard are to be found in the vendors section, and one other is Dave Forgebear in the UK and on the ADVERTISING BANNER of the home page. As far as your first tank the advise given is accurate. It would help to know where you live as the vendors are spread over 5 countries. I would suggest that before you purchase a tank ask about the vendor, the model you choose and what it is going to cost, this way if something is not correct we can guide you so you will not be disappointed. cheers Saxondog

I started with a Tiger 1. Lots of upgrades available. They can get very expensive as you go mad with upgrades. Worth having a look at rctank.de
Good prices. Lots of ideas but his tanks are mostly heavily upgraded. Also speaks english and I found him helpful. He gave me the link for this forum. First thing I saw when I opened your post was cheap Tamiya. Does not exist. Heng Long are great to start with.
