Smoking Tamiya Tiger

Post by oztruck »

Love my Tamiya Tiger but there was something missing. SMOKE

With my HL tanks the first thing I do is remove the smoke unit. They give nothing but trouble and "leak all over da place",
. But when I saw the new RCcommand smoke unit it looked like it could be a winner and just the thing I NEEDED for my Tam Tiger. :D

Long story made short. It takes about 20 minutes max to install and fits well inside the Tamiya Tiger and the end result is well worth the money.

Enough smoke so it can be seen, but not too much as if it were on fire. It runs very quiet and even with the Tamiya sound system turned down low you still can't hear the smoker working, (nice change) 8O

The way to install it is simple, I took a few photos of how I did it that I will post, as soon as I find the cameras USB cable. :wtf:

With the RCcommand system they give you a syringe to put your fluid in the unit. First I put 20cc in tested the level then added another 20cc's which did then fill it. In there instructions they tell you to use the syringe to remove any excess fluid (the fluid that didn't soak into the wick) which I did. very easy and takes the guess work out of the whole process.

Charged up the batteries and took it for a drive around ,and around, and around, and around, till I ran out of drive battery but the smoke still was working. XLNT. :D

Next time I run it all I have to do is top up the fluid, remove the excess and away it goes

I like it and did a video of it running. Hope you like it 8)

Fantastic video oz! I'm wondering do you get smoke when you go in reverse? I scratch built a smoke unit, but couldn't get smoke while in reverse.

Cheers,

Yep it smokes both forward and reverse. The unit doesn't use an oil it is a water and glycol based "fog Fluid". Same stuff they use in professional smoke units that you see on stage performances. I LOVE my smoker.

Ok, here we go.

After getting there new smoke unit from Rccommand I wanted to put it into the Tamiya Tiger1 WITHOUT changing the way the Tiger fitted together, ran and sounds.

This is what I did to install there unit and still retain all the good things about the Tamiya tanks.

After deciding where to place the unit I then had to work out where and how the smoke was to be plumbed to exit through the model exhaust pipes without removing the sound box for the speaker.

What I did was mount 2 pipes running through the speaker box.
I used alloy tube that I had lying around.

Image

I marked the box and drilled the holes to match up with the exhaust outlets. then I placed the tubes through them. One of the pipes had to be dent to go around the speaker

Image

I then drilled 2 holes in the rear wall of the hull where the pipes run into the exhaust stacks.
On one end of the pipes I added some smaller pipe to fit the plastic tube that comes with the unit and on the other end some rubber tube to go through the rear hull wall

Image

I then put the speaker back into is original spot with the new tubes going into the exhaust pipes

Image

Then I connected the smoke unit up according to the instructions that Rccommand sent with the unit, filled it with the fluid and turned it on. I worked very well straight from the start. By now I was VERY happy.

Next step was to install the hull top and check for any problems. None at all. Fits very well and sit on top of one of the batteries

I then mounted the turret, tested for any binding or tight spots and again no problems

So what could I do but go outside and play See video above

One of the best additions to my Tiger, looks and sounds great now. Money well spent
