Using a servo for recoil

Hi guys,
I need a bit of advice. Is it possible to use a servo for recoil on a Tamiya system?

The project i'm working on has limited turret space, so a servo would be great. Hopefully one of the electronic wizards on here will be able to help.

Cheers,
Rik

I cant see a reason not to,the self return may give you a headache tho...lol

There are some lovely hi-torque/hi-speed micro servos on the market now

Thats the problem, the return, plus synching it to the sound, which is why i've wondered if anyone has tried it. Im guessing that plugging it into the MFU recoil socket wouldn't work.

i dont know how tamiya boards work but i do know how servos work (14 years of 1/10 cars)..

if the board sends out a single trigger signal that should boot the servo into action, but as soon as the power is cut the servo will remain in that position..you may not get the duration you need for a recoil unless you play with the length of the servo horn and you will also need a spring return of some kind

maybe something simple like a double ended cam and a spring return?

I did think aong those lines, the problem being that its slow back and snaps forward, the opposite of the effect i'm after.

I think i'm just going to go with the Tamiya unit, sutiably modified and hidden. I need to pick up a spare recoil unit to tinker with and see what I can do.

Ive had a bit of a head scratch and it is a possibility to do it with a servo

what you would have to do is use a spring to pull the barrel back,,that would mean using a voltage to the servo to keep the barrel out, then drop the voltage via a form of reversed relay, the spring would pull the barrel back, then the voltage would resume to the servo to return it to its parked position, thus pulling the barrel back

Complex but it should work

You could buy this recoil board that uses a servo for recoil .

That's an interesting idea. I may have to look into that one.

Thanks for the links Jimmy  , the only problem is this will only work with HL electronics, it's not compatible with Tamiya gear.
