El-Mod supply the whole tank control system, just like you would get with a Full Option Tamiya kit. It consists of the 'Thinktank' module which controls the basic tank functions, the 'Blaster' which contains the sound module, and the 'CSI' which is the battle circuit.
Its superior to the Tamiya in terms of driveability (gradual acceleration vs screaming away like a scolded hen), sounds (you can load your own) and ease of radio setup (if you are using a digital radio like the Spektrum DX5/DX6 series). The Tamiya battle circuit add-on is better as the Tamiya IR tower is neatly packaged, with built in blind spots, where as you have to make your own cover with the El-Mod one. I haven't range tested an el-mod system yet, so I can't say how it compares to the 90ft Tamiya range.
My only other complaint with the El-Mod system is that their acceleration curve is set up for specific motor and gearbox combinations, and if your's is one they haven't seen (like the RCCommand gearboxes in my Tiger I) then the acceleration of the tank is too slow. Their 4th Generation system allows you to tweak that via a USB interface from your computer, so hopefully this should be a thing of the past :~
Retail price in Europe is roughly the same as the Tamiya system, unless you manage to get parts from Hong Kong or Japan past HM Customs without getting stung for tax. If you do go down the import route, you will not be able to get warranty service locally, where as the guys at El-Mod are a little more accommodating...

Silverstalker,
Its just sooooo better than the HL stuff

You can get the adaptor module that will allow you to use the HL radio with the El-Mod electronics, but that's defeating the purpose
In terms of driveability
it is the deluxe model, and the sounds are much better than HL if you get a decent speaker to go with the sound unit.
As I said before, If you want to get involved in the club you need to move away from the HL radio's into the land of 2.4 GHz anyway, and unlike the Tamiya equipment its really easy to set up with those radios - we like the Planet t5, but the Spektrum DX5e works just as well
If you need more help you can always PM wibblywobbly - he is our resident El-mod expert
