paint remover

Post by Gigantohawk »

Does anybody know what I can use to safely remove paint from H/L tanks ? I have a PZIV on the way and would like to start any paint work on bare plastic, probably starting off with gunmetal as a base coat.
I've heard the Americans use "windex". Is there an English equivalent brand that would work ?

In the painting and weathering board,Easy-off oven cleaner will strip all painting on an H/L tank,my Tiger required about 4 sprays and a little work with a toothbrush to loosen the paint in crevices. That was a customs painted tank with several coats of primer, sealer and paint.Hope this helps,Saxondog http://rctankwarfare.co.uk/forums/viewt ... 9&start=80" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Page 5 photos of easyoff working

I just stripped my Bulldog of lacquer, camo nets, and about 4 coats of paint. If you use acrylics to paint with then the bonus is that they are water soluble, so in my case nothing more than plenty of water, a plastic pot scouring pad and some elbow grease got it all off. I went through my entire repertoire of bottles and cans of things that I thought might help, and the most effective was plain old sugar soap, cheap as chips.

Still need to finish off the detail but at least with a green scheme it won't stick out like a sore thumb on the battlefield.

The more observant will have noticed:

Extended fenders
Removed rear mg mount
Lowered front mg mount
Lowered periscopes
Shortened antennae (plus will add another dummy one)

May add camo nets and weathering....

Ah yes, Luton, prepare to meet the scrapyard in the sky. :shifty:

I have an RX18 on its way to put in the Bulldog, I managed to knock a wire loose while it was in bits and it caused a short on the RX14 that has given trusty service for all these years. I knew taking it apart was a bad idea!

Hi Sax and Rob,
Thanks for your replies Gents. I'll have a go with the oven cleaner and toothbrush. If that fails I'll try the sugar soap and see how that goes.
Rob, your Bulldog looks bloomin' good. What electronics have you got in that ?

All the best,

Nick.

I had an RX14 in it, but following the rebuild a wire came loose and it blew. I fitted an RX18 this afternoon, and that included customising the wiring so that I could run it with the Darkith unit. Put it all back together and it is like new again.

It's got metal tracks, Graupner Speed 400 motors, metal gearboxes, and a Darkith battle system with the sensors and led's all hidden within the turret, so it is Tamiya compatible for battling too. :D

I might make a short video if the weather is ok tomorrow.

Make the Vid Rob, the weather will just fine. I would like to see it with your Darkith system working.
I've got a PZIV coming from "The Blitz". He's installed all the Darkith stuff for me . I'm really looking forward to getting it and modifying it. I've got a lot of improvements to make to the tank in respect of detail and all should be good when I've finished.

Hey Rob,could you detail how the sensors are placed in the turret? Curious about this arrangement?Nick I hope you get things sorted out, stripping can be labor intensive. Thanks Blake

Hi Blake.
What do you think of this...I base coated my Tamiya Sherman with Tamiya Flat Aluminium then over painted it with Tamiya Olive Green. The theory there was, as the green naturally chipped it would reveal the Flat Aluminium underneath. The theory works great, the downside is the Aluminium is too silvery white in colour.
So I thought of base coating my H/L PZIV in Tamiya Gunmetal in order to give the "chippings" a more dull metal look. Hence the need to strip all the paint off my PZIV and start off with bare plastic. Rather than paint gunmetal over the existing paint as I don't want too much paint build obscuring detail.
What do you think ?

Nick.
