Hi People,
I've receintly bought a Heng Long Tiger 1 from eBay as I've always wanted a RC Tank but can't afford Tamiya. I just wondered are there any mods you would recommend? also is it possible to get rid of the radio gear it comes with and fit a 4channel transmitter etc as I've heard lots about the stock electronics shorting easy

hey The_Blue_dragon,
firstly welcome to the forum!
for mods to corrext it etc check out the 'Things to fix on your new tank!' and look at the tiger 1 section inside that

should be some usefull stuff their!
as to replacing the electronics, if you wish to just replace the transmitter with a 4channel, you can go down the route of hitting 2 birds with one stone and fit a DBCRCHL2 which also battle readies your tank with Infar Red capability

however this can be as dodgy as heng long itself sometimes.
the other 2 ways most people do it is to completely replace the HL electronics with ones such as 'el-mod' (
http://www.el-mod.de" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) or tamiya - both of which are fairly expensive and you'd need to obviously buy the 4 channel transmitter which really increases the price.
Heng Long electronics arn't as bad as some say, i've only even blown one Heng Long board and that was probably my own stupidity.
hope some of this helps
cheers,
Matt

I agree with Matt - the Heng Long boards aren't all that bad. There are two simple things I recommend to make the Heng Long Electronics significantly more reliable and they cost you nothing:
Assuming your tank has an older control board check all the wires inside the tank are well soldered (they are very often only connected by a couple of strands due to poor workmanship in the factory). Once you have done this, add a dab of sealant or uhu/ bostic glue to each connection so that vibration doesn't cause the wire to break in the future.
Fit one 3 amp fuse in line with each motor (the most common reason Heng Long boards fail is that the drive circuit can't handle the power taken by a stalled motor). Better to replace a fuse than a board.
Happy tanking.

Hi
Matt is right just put some fuses on the motors and you should be good for a few years.
I have had my P III for nearly three years with no board faults.
and the board is an 14.

My three year old Tiger still runs it's original RX-13.
Modify your gearboxes to 3 to 1 ratio and do BREL's HL Tx mod for starters, you'll have a far easier and nicer to drive tank.

Cheapest and most cost effective way to build a Tamiya compatible tank is to stick with the HL electrics and fit the cheaper Darkith battle system. It also improves the driveability of the tank no end. I have two and they are great. One with an RX14 and one with an RX18. They have been running for a 'very' long time with no probs at all.
The HL boards are very reliable and cheap as chips to replace.
