As a newbie to tanks, i would like to know what advantages there is to putting metal tracks on

Hi Rob the main advantages are ( in my opinion ). Metal tracks look much more realistic and provide more weight to your tank which makes it look much more "true to life " when driving across rough ground. Improves traction, and they are not so prone to coming off or breaking. The down side is you need idler wheel adjustment to get correct tension as well as (in my opinion ) some sort of drive shaft support, be it bushing or bearing as metal tracks will increase stress on your gearboxes. Hello Rob,I must agree with Alan,the weight and control in rough ground is much better.Otherwise with a lighter tank and plastic tracks the tank seems to spin tracks and not dig in.But also as Alan has stated the gearbox and output shafts do require an upgrade as well.Their are several package deals available so check out the vendor section for where to purchase the parts,member discounts available with select vendors.The Drive package parts in the picture were all purchased from recommended vendors listed on this forum. advantages:
1)Your wallet will become lighter and easier to transport.
2) Look and feel and long lasting and they make that squeaky sound when running
4) easy to weather, they are metal and will wear in the right spots showing the nice bare metal underneath.


Cons:
1)They are expensive
2) if looks matter, some are way better than others . But, this depends on which tanks too. For ex: My HL jagdpanther had plastic tracks, HL metal tracks, and Impact tracks. BY FAR, the impacts ran the best and had the best appearance. BUT, they cost the most.


Other thoughts:
BUT on the other hand, I have heng long standard metal tracks on my Panzer III and they look and function perfectly. And sometimes, you have to buy what you can...Ex: if you want Ostkette tracks for your PIII or Stug, ther is only one manufacturuer, and they are somewhat pricey, but look great.

Personally, I like Impact tracks. Just got a set for my king tger...just AWSOME!

Just to add to the above, metal tracks can be very easily chemically blackened. You can use Carr's Metal Black or Perma-Blue and it gives them a very realistic finish. The sag and weight of metal tracks just makes the movement look so much better.
