2 two and a half year tours in Germany and an incentive by the Royal Army Education corp who offered money to soldiers who learnt certain languages including German.

Herzliches Wilkommen, Herr IIHadesII. Ich habe Deutsch als Dreizehnjähriger gelernt, jedoch obwohl ich fünf Bücher Schopenhauers ubersetzt habe, doch kann ich kaum reden, denn ich bin nur 10 Tage in Deutschland und der Schweiz gewesen. Meiner Deutsch ist altmodlich.
A hearty welcome, Mr. IIHadesII. I learned German as a thirteen-year-old; however, although I have translated five of Schopenhauer's published works, I can hardly speak, for I have been in Germany and Switzerland for only 10 days. My German is old-fashioned.
