"Greatest Tank Battles".
Great detail, interviews, and graphics on many tank battles.

By any standard, Whittman failed in his role as company commader, taking the working tank he had and charged in blind while leaving his men to fend for themselves. The German army report on his conduct is scathing in its criticism.

He was the company commander, he should be sending his men in there while calling up HQ and reporting, not charging in like a lunatic... He was increadibly lucky that he made it out of town to the Panzer Lehr positions to get reinforcements, without this it may well have ended up with an Allied break thru.
The action that he was killed in is pretty much the same - charge in without recon and hope for the best
The Army report is correct, as acting battalion commander he threw away not only his crews lives, but also (another) 4 Corps level assets for no gain.

You guys are bayonetting a dead body. The guy survived 3 years on the Eastern Front.; should get a medal just for that.
The attack where he was killed was ordered by Kurt Meyer. I don't think he knew he was heading directly into the teeth
of Operation Totalize to close the Falaise pocket.
