Hi Everyone....
I can't claim to be a real 'Old Tanker', but I'm certainly old and I've been tinkering with Radio Control Tanks for over 50 years now, (on and off).

Back in those days multichannel RC was quite expensive, so my first one was a 1/16 Panzer IV with a homemade single channel radio that stepped a rotary switch which sequentially gave left/right/forward/backward/turret etc.. etc.. So very Heath Robinson compared to nowadays but it seemed very impressive at the time.

I've since spent a lot more of my 'disposable income' on all things RC (yachts.drones etc).

I've recently bought a used non-working Tiger 1 with mostly metal parts with the intention of stripping it down and rebuilding and spraying it and adding a few extras, like FPV and an ELRS rx so that I can control it with my TX16s.

It's mostly in good shape, with the premium (black gear) motors working ok, but the fault appears to be with the v3 MCU. When I power it up (with a good fully charged NIMH), the fan runs but none of the controls have any effect after binding. So I'm wondering if the board is blown or just the RX part. I notice it has the ability to be driven from an external rx by connecting each servo channel, but those bespoke leads are missing, so I don't know whether to buy a new set or just buy a new MCU in case the board itself is U/S.

I'd make up the servo leads myself, but I can't identify the type of tiny 3pin sockets on the MCU.

I'd be grateful for any advice and opinions on the best way forward to fix or upgrade the radio gear.

I found a youtube video where a Guy even went as far as using a new pair of Esc's and an RX, but I can't find it again.

Nice Taigen Tiger starting point. Are you working on a specific budget?

I suggest a TK 7.0 Swap. I just completed the electronics on my project and it drives like a dream. Parts are about $85 all in. TX/RX, smoker, speaker, wiring, switches, IR bulb, IR apple, everything except a battery.

I've read a few posts about MCU swapping and upgrading, and the 7 certainly seems like a potentially good option, but I'm uncertain of whether I'd need a new 'toy' Toyo TX to match it. There seems to be masses of info on boards like this and youtube, but tricky to find a concise summary of what works with what.

Welcome from Argyll and Bute. I see you have met our resident Tiger fondler. You will be safe in his embracing bosom. He’s not a too bad in the kitchen by all accounts as well. I will be removing a complete system from a Taigen over Christmas Ifyou would be interested. We Tiger owners have stick together and help each other keep them operating. Because there is not enough of them.

Thanks for the very kind offer Meter Rat, but fate has stepped in and a used TK7.0 complete with controller suddenly popped up, so I jumped on it. Hopefully it will solve the problem of my faulty V3, and very cheaply too.

It's always good to have a budget, you can then easily see how much you busted it by....
