Heng Long Abrams metal track adjustment

Where to begin? I removed one front wheel to get to the adjuster. Moved it one notch. Trying to get the wheel in the track and reinstall it is a problem? Used as much force as I dared but that was not straight enough to start the screw. Should I be taking off the front part of the rear drive sprocket? That screw was tight an possibly had thread retainer on it? Got one turn an it felt too tight like it would strip? In a intelligent move for me I stopped an asked for help!
I spent a while searching for info on this but all I found was rubber track info.
How much slack is correct? I have about twice as much as when new about 1/2" on one an 3/4" on the one I messed with.
Any other maintenance I should do while the tank is open?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Between 5mm and 10mm of slack. Modern tanks run with tight tracks. Do you have plastic, or metal tracks? Keep it clean, watch for a build up of dirt and grass in the wheels and sprockets.

A small amount of oil in the gear boxes. You might want to think about some drive axel support bearings.
