Hello,

So I have a Tamiya 1/16 King Tiger with the original plastic tracks but the problem it’s it throws tracks very often. I am planning on upgrading to metal tracks this winter but don’t have the budget for gearboxes. I don’t drive it a lot could I possibly just upgrade the tracks and drive it around once in a while but not the gearboxes?

Thank you

Hi Mike. Taigen tracks will fit your Tamiya Tiger 1.I got my tracks for my Tamiya Tiger 1 from Forgebear and you will see that in their Tiger1 listing they state will also fit a Tamiya. Taigen King Tiger tracks will not fit a Tamiya KT. East coast armor has made a few different You tube video's of his Tamiya Tiger 1 builds. In one he makes mention of the tracks. Great watching. Also, are you running the original idler system. Axles Modellbau sell a two piece nylon bush kit to support of the cast idler arms as they enter the hull. Makes the Tamiya idler setup nice and rigid so it works correctly and is very easy to install .Look at some Tamiya Tiger 1 builds on the forum and you will see a couple of members have used them in their builds .Regards John.

Just realized you do have a KT .Only options are E bay [Patrick out of Hong Kong] or DKLM out of Singapore or just get some more plastic track links and upgrade your idler system. Henntec or Axles Modellbau for those parts so a least the idler works correctly and is putting the correct tension on the tracks. John.

Hello yes I have the Tamiya King Tiger 1/16 and already brought the henntec system already. But my main question is if the gear boxes will be able to support the heavier workload. I won’t plan on driving it very often tho.

As I don’t have the budget to upgrade the gear boxes and only want to upgrade the metal tracks

Your first priority is sorting out the track alighnment so that you are no longer "Throwing" tracks, If the alighnment is good metal or plastic tracks won't make much difference,
I would not expect the fix to cost more than a few pennies but at worst it will be the price of one of Giodoe's devises,
You should find the answer on the Forum and other members may well have the answer.
I hesitate to advance Tom Hugills name but he really is the goto for matters Tamiya in my opinion.

I have a Tamiya KT which was a basket case.
The gearbox's will cope, trust me.
Of concern though is the shedding of the tracks.
I have NEVER had the tracks derail from this poor old Tamyia KT no matter what I deal to it.
Moving in a circle of mates that have loads of them, they dont have that problem either.
Please take the time to check your alignment, I note you have a Henntec installed..............have you got it in the right alignment?
Mine runs the OEM Tamy track tensioner that apparently is crap, but none the less, no track losses.

My son and I between us have had several Tamiya K/T’s all with metal tracks. I usually use Patrick or Manhunter out of Hong Kong. They fit no problems.

I have had no problems with the gearboxes per se. However you will probably notice that the front drive cogs start to toe out or your K/T become duck footed as I call it. The weight of the tracks distorts the hull. There are numerous cures some involve spending lots of money some involve a piece of metal cut to link the gearboxes together. I suspect if you search this site you find numerous explanations how to fix it.

Now what I have just said does not apply if you fit the aftermarket 3 in1 reduction gearboxes in-between the electric motor and the Tamiya gearbox and metal tracks. Then you may have problems with stripped gears, bearing in mind there is no easy way to get spare gears for the Tamiya gearboxes.

I would agree with what others have said, a Tamiya K/T under normal circumstances does not throw tracks, I would suggest a total strip of the running gear. I have seen a friends K/T and he had managed to put the wheels together incorrectly.

I know people hate the K/T idler, I think I am strange because I like it and I can get it to work very well.

Personally I would not bother with metal wheels The Tamiya ones are half metal anyway. I have a much modified K/t from the 1980’s still on Tamiya wheels and bearings, no problems.

Hello,

Thank you for everyone answers I have the Jenny RC but haven’t replaced it either as I want to know is there a way I can reach Tom Hugill and also by throwing tracks I mean the pins while turning usually detach itself from the tracks and the tracks end up split in half. I might have used the wrong wording of throwing tracks, my apologies
