I'm a long time r/c flier and wanted to give this a shot. I'm 3d printing a 1/10 scale Tiger. It requires two brushed motors and two ESCs. I'm trying to read/learn about controllers but end up going down multiple rabbit holes, not much luck finding an introductory guide after two days of searching.

My question is:

"Do I need a control board?" if I'm just after basic travel, turret and barrel movement, and trigger an Airsoft mechanism? Can I just mix/program channels on a six-channel Spektrum transmitter to achieve this? It sounds like controllers give lots more options like sound, lights, smoke, etc. which I might explore later.

Thats a good question im also concidering getting a 3D printer to start macking some tanks id say the easy route would be to get a MFU with cables + its own transmitter, if you want somthing basic. Forgebear sell a Taigen set. Or you could go with a more bespoke board such as Clark, Elmod or Beier.

I'd say you could get all the controls working from your own transmitter and a reciever but i dont know how that would work if you want the tank to have sound.

Im fairly new myself my first build is fairly standardised parts so 3D printing is a new venture

You can stay with your radio and have proportional sound and lights, e.g. using the Dasmikro board.

The Taigen board is not designed for heavy loads (more powerful engines and heavier models).

Recently someone actually hooked up external ESCs to the HL 7.1 board for a tank build that needed larger motors. I think they used CH3 and CH4 on the controller.

OK, thanks for that. I was seeing some posts about size and loads on systems, what you say makes sense. This is most likely going to be a one-off build. I already had to get a part-time job to support my flying!

I'd look at the Sabretooth range of dual speed controllers to which you can add other functions. Easy to use and very compact.
