[Paper Panzers] Swedish Kranvagn

Post by tankme »

I was surprised when Inkor announced the Kranvagn, but since I like weird tanks I decided to print it. Since I just started printing it a few days ago I thought I'd enter the fray. Being a paper panzer the details are a little scarce on the model so it has been printing super fast. I have about 3 days of printing so far and it already looks like a tank. I've started with texturing the turret as it looks to be a cast piece. Not sure yet how I want to paint it.

And finally, the Bambu is starting a print to knock out most of the suspension parts.

Once those parts print, I only have the wheels, sprockets, idlers, return rollers, tracks, and the front fenders to print.

That's all for now.

I think it's super, super, super cool you can just print tanks up like this. Do you have any pictures of the "real" paper panzer? I've not heard of this one before and am intrigued. I can't wait to see how this one turns out as well.

Wow, impressive and curious. Not aware of this one. Look forward to your work.

The Kranvagn only existed as blueprints so no real examples were made, but it has been reborn as a World of Tanks playable heavy tank.

There is some info about it here: http://ftr.wot-news.com/2013/12/12/kran ... velopment/

And a pic of the completed tank:

Two hulls were built and both still exist at the Arsenalen tank museum but due to various issues in development the turrets were never built.
After the program was cancelled the hull of the first vehicle was used to test the suspension for the Strv 103 and the second hull was rebuilt into the first prototype Bandkanon self propelled artillery.

Making progress...

Elevation arm and servo installed.

Recoil servo and hatches mounted.

Gearbox dry fit. I had to remove the rear brace as it didn't fit with the gearbox. The gearbox is an exact fit, no room on either side so I'd say the rear brace isn't needed.

Road wheels, suspension, exhaust covers, and front fenders installed. Road wheels were modified to accept bearings.

At this point the tracks and a few detail items are all that are left to be printed. Initial prints in PETG for the tracks didn't look good. I'll probably be printing them in resin. I haven't permanently attached the turret halves yet as the servos need to be adjusted and a apple mount needs to be mounted in the loader's hatch. Can't really adjust the servos once the two parts are mated together and it's a bit of a pain to put them together and take them apart repeatedly.

Sacrilege! How dare you cheapen the project with that suggestion...LOL Frankly think they are too wide. The tracks are more akin to Tiger tracks minus the multiple guides.

Great part about printing the tracks is if they break I can always print spares and I do print plenty to start with. When given the opportunity to use the real pattern, I will. Inkor always uses the 49mm offset for the gearboxes which actually causes an issue using the gearbox I selected. Even though it's set for 49mm shafts, they are too long because Inkor adjusts the spacing of the normal 49mm gearboxes in the hull to fit his sprocket offset. HL always positions the gearbox with the same offset in the hull. Since I can't adjust where the shafts of the HL Dual Current/PDGBS gearbox, I have to cut the shafts to fit this application and then re-notch them to fit the gear. It's not a big deal. If end up with issues with the sprockets, I can always get metal ones printed from PCBWay or some similar company. I haven't priced out getting metal tracks printed, but that could also be an option... :)

Just a brief bit of progress...

Got the cast texture added to the turret, got all of the internals wired up/tested, added all the small details, and shot a coat of primer on it. Still needs to touch up work, but the project is progressing.
