Prior to the Normandy/D-Day invasion these were produced and used by the Tactical deception unit or "Ghost Army" to mislead the Germans as to unit positions and strength.

Here's a book on the Ghost Army:

Beyer, Rick and Elizabeth Sayles. The Ghost Army of World War II: How One Top Secret Unit Deceived the Enemy with Inflatable Tanks, Sound Effects, and Other Audacious Fakery. Princeton Architectural Press, n.d. ISBN 978-1-61689-318-7.

The "n.d." you see after the publisher means "no date." It is really odd for a New York publisher to indicate no date on the title page, nor anywhere else I can find. The back cover mentions an "acclaimed documentary film The Ghost Army, which premiered on PBS in 2013," so I am guessing the book is from around that time.
