SAS Willy's Jeep

Post by SteamBoatWillie »

I suspect this has been done on here before but it was suggested to me to post pictures of my own version by a couple of existing members. I started with a ROCHobby 1/6th scale RC Willy's Jeep. I also bought the 1/6th scale Dragon kit of the SAS Willy's Jeep. I pinched all the accessories from the Dragon kit to enhance my model and sold the remaining standard Dragon jeep on to a friend to recover some of he expense. The passenger in the jeep is a UJINDOU 1/6th scale Blair Mayne figure, which comes with quite a few usefull accessories. The driver figure is made up from various spare bits and pieces and some of Blair Mayne's spare uniform and he had a servo fitted into his chest with the head mounted on it. The servo is connected into the steering wheel servo supply so the head turns with the front wheels and the steering wheel.

The load is a combination of accessories from the Dragon kit, 3D printed items found on Ebay and some 1/6th scale weapons from such sources as Dragon In Dreams. The receiver was changed for a Spektrum receiver so I could drive it with my Spektrum dx6i transmitter. Some bits such as the ammo storage boxes and the Bagnold Sun compass were scratch built. The jeep was stripped down and given a cleaning up before all the parts were repainted in suitable SAS colours. The chipped effect is done by an overall Tamiya acrylic gunmetal, followed by dry brushed enamel rust tones, then a hairspray coating and finally an acrylic water based top coat from a spray tin. This was then teased off by wetting and then rubbing with a small airbrush cleaning brush. This was finished of with washes around fittings and a little shading over the top colour to vary the tone.

That looks great and those bags are amazing. The natural diorama is really cool too

I did try changing the shock absorber units for some aftermarket ones but, no matter what combination of springs I used I could not get the jeep to behave as realistically as it does with the originals. Maybe I just have to imagine with this one that they pinched some spare shock units from another destroyed vehicle!

Interestingly they 1/12th roc hobby is much better detailed and has leaf springs - I have one and it’s very good.

The bags were an Ebay find and thankfully not the crazy prices that you see for Dragon In Dream items:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/154890212397 ... 5008323712

I give them a soak in a thinned enamel wash then dab a slightly heavier wash at random on the wet cloth to vary the tone. Finally they get rubbed with a dust coloured pigment to 'fade' the overall look.

The diorama base is my drive! Great for 1/6th photo shoots, terrible for riding a motorcycle over!

I do agree, and I thought of using the ones from the Dragon kit, but then I would have lost the complete remaining jeep that I was able to sell on. I actually think the 1/12 scale one is better in a few ways, the lighting and indicators for a start!

Gear! It's all about the gear! Jeep looks great. What's the gun tucked away in the back near the Bren?

Its a UJINDOU UD9020 1/6 WWII BRITISH SAS North African Campaign 1942-43 STEN MK II with silencer, bought seperately but from ths set:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/175787999831

There's also an Enfield rifle and the Thompson from the Blair Mayne set in there somewhere. Since these shots I moved things around a bit so you could see the items more clearly!
