As you likely know, many Germans are fluent in English. I was in Germany only once, over 50 years ago, and even then the people would hardly let me practice German as they wanted to practice English. We even had some conversations in which I, the then rather young American, spoke (clumsy) German and the Germans (of all ages) spoke rather good English.
