FYI: The movie is good, and it did to me convey some of the sense of tension the destroyer crew and particularly captain experience, as well as the problems of the icy weather. But the book has the advantage of fully portraying the captain's character, faults, anxieties, and, especially, he concerns about the lives and reliability of his crew. I don't know if the the captain's psychological tensions could be conveyed in film without turning it into a dramatically different "art" film.
I do recommend the original novel. It's readily available in various editions, new and used, via Amazon, Abe Books, Biblio.com, and scads more.

When it comes to WWII U boat films, there is only one worth watching, and that is Das Boot (The Boat).

Most definitely Das Boot, director's cut, German with subtitles. Watched the dubbed English version for about 10 minutes, and back to German.

Yes, totally correct, and I have the directors cut in my DVD collection

I am so pleased I learnt German in the service if only to get the true feel of the crews interaction in Das Boot.
Truly an international film.
