Mick, the Challenger 1 and 2 tanks both have rifled gun. Allowing for more accuracy over longer distances. We also fire HESH and can’t fire HEAT from rifled barrels.

The new Challenger 3 will have a 130mm smooth bore, the gun the new Leopard has. Same ammo etc

Mick, the guy I spoke to didn't make the distance claim, I was reading about the Challenger and found that online. I must have assumed it was the 2.
Good discussion.

Even though I am American, I suspect that either the Leopard or the Challenger would win out. From my admittedly non-expert vantage point, it seems my American forebears made some dumb decisions in the 1970s, ... especially the turbine engine. I don't know much about Japan's JGSDF 10, but it too seems to have several high-end features that might prevail in real battle.
One of the best ways to appreciate the beauty of the Universe is learn the language that Mother Nature truly speaks in, ... mathematics.
